Katy Perry’s Space Journey Sparks “Pretentious” Criticism

Pop superstar Katy Perry’s recent spaceflight aboard Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission has drawn mixed reactions, with some viewers labeling her post-flight comments as “pretentious.” The eleven-minute suborbital trip, which GB News initially heralded as “breaking news,” featured Perry alongside five other prominent women, including journalist Gayle King, media personality Lauren Sánchez, and former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe. This mission marked a historic milestone as the first all-female crew in over six decades. However, it was Perry’s reflections upon returning to Earth, rather than the space voyage itself, that ignited criticism.

Post-Flight Reflections and Reactions

In a post-flight interview, Perry, clutching a daisy she carried into orbit, expressed deep emotion. “I feel so connected to love,” she shared, adding, “This experience has demonstrated to me that you never realize the extent of love within you.” She later stated the space journey ranked “second after being a mother” in significance. Explaining her choice of flower, the 39-year-old, who briefly paused her music career for the mission, noted the daisy symbolized resilience due to its commonality and ability to “grow through any circumstances.”

“Benefit to Earth” and Criticism Mounts

The “Fireworks” singer further declared, “This is all for the benefit of Earth,” and “I wanted to model courage, worthiness, and fearlessness.” She acknowledged the difficulty of leaving her young daughter, stating she had to “surrender” to the universe, while confirming plans to write a song inspired by the experience.

Despite the mission’s landmark all-female composition, public reception to the perceived fanfare surrounding it remained lukewarm. Viewers criticized both the media coverage and Perry’s statements, deeming them exaggerated and self-absorbed.

One disgruntled viewer commented, “Call me cynical if you like, but in my view, these privileged women have simply paid a substantial sum for a taxi ride…” Another questioned the mission’s “historic” nature, asking, “what makes this ‘historic’? they sat in a fully automated taxi, am I missing something?”

Further online reactions included comments such as “Pass the sick bucket,” “Pretentious codswallop!” and sarcastic use of “ASTRONAUT!!!” accompanied by humorous GIFs.

Mission Details and Celebrity Support

The Blue Origin NS-31 mission also included bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn among its crew. Prior to the launch in Texas, Perry, Sánchez, and King were supported by celebrity friends Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian.

Perry’s daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, whom she shares with actor Orlando Bloom, was present at the launch to witness her mother’s journey to space.

“She’s four and a half, so she’s still trying to understand the days of the week,” Perry joked about her daughter’s understanding of the mission before liftoff. “But talking about mommy going to space is quite normal for us now, and I will be so thrilled to embrace her when I return.”

“Sisterhood” and In-Flight Serenade

Journalist Gayle King described the all-female crew as a “sisterhood.” She also revealed that Perry serenaded the crew with “What a Wonderful World” during their descent back to Earth.
