Marc Márquez Secures Victory at Qatar Grand Prix After First-Lap Incident
Doha, Qatar – Marc Márquez of Ducati triumphed at the Qatar Grand Prix, reclaiming the top spot on the podium despite an early race incident. In a dramatic start at the Lusail International Circuit, the MotoGP race saw Márquez collide with his brother Alex on the opening lap, resulting in damage to his bike. Despite this setback, Marc Márquez, who had earlier secured his fourth consecutive pole position with a record-breaking lap and a sprint race victory on Saturday, achieved his first win in Qatar since 2014.
Viñales and Bagnaia Complete Podium
Maverick Viñales representing Red Bull KTM finished second, although his result is subject to a post-race investigation into potential tyre-pressure irregularities. Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati secured the third position. Franco Morbidelli from VR46 Racing, who briefly led in the initial stages of the race, finished fourth.
Championship Standings Update
This victory elevates Marc Márquez to the summit of the rider standings with 123 points, establishing a 17-point advantage over Alex Márquez of Gresini Racing. Bagnaia currently holds third place with 97 points.
Márquez on Tyre Management and Race Strategy
Speaking after the race, Márquez revealed his strategy, stating, “I needed to manage the front tyres, which is why I remained composed during the initial phase. Morbidelli was ahead, but based on yesterday’s rhythms, I anticipated he would not maintain that pace in the latter part of the race.”
He further commented on Viñales’ performance: “It was a significant surprise when Maverick overtook me. Initially, I thought it was [Pedro] Acosta, known for his KTM speed. He was exceptionally fast, but I had reserves for the end. Winning in Qatar is incredible.”

Race Highlights: Start and Early Laps
Marc Márquez executed an exemplary start, seizing the lead into the first corner. However, contact with his brother Alex caused damage to the rear of Marc’s Ducati. Morbidelli, starting from the fourth grid position, capitalized on this and surged to the front.
Alex Márquez and Di Giannantonio Collision
Alex Márquez encountered further misfortune, becoming involved in another incident, this time with Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 Racing. Both riders lost ground as a result. Alex Márquez immediately gestured an apology and was subsequently penalized with a long lap penalty by race stewards, relegating him to 12th and effectively ending his podium aspirations after consistent second-place finishes in previous sprints and races this season.
Mid-Race Battles and Viñales’ Charge
Bagnaia and Marc Márquez engaged in a close contest for second place, exchanging positions while utilizing slipstreaming tactics. Meanwhile, Maverick Viñales on the Red Bull KTM advanced to third. Marc Márquez appeared to be struggling with bike damage as Viñales out-braked him at turn one, claiming second position.
Viñales Takes the Lead
Viñales then focused on Morbidelli and successfully overtook him for the lead on the main straight with 12 laps remaining. Shortly after, Marc Márquez and Bagnaia also passed Morbidelli.
Martín’s Race Ends Early
Defending champion Jorge Martín, competing in his first race following injury recovery, crashed out at turn 11 and was unable to finish.
Márquez Regains Lead and Secures Victory
Towards the race conclusion, Marc Márquez ultimately retook the lead from Viñales, who ran wide, allowing Márquez to move ahead with seven laps remaining. From that point, Márquez pressed his advantage, unleashing a series of fastest laps to create a gap over Viñales and comfortably ride to the finish line, securing victory at the Qatar MotoGP Grand Prix.
