The highly anticipated 170th annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race is scheduled for Sunday amidst unprecedented controversy, marking one of the most contentious lead-ups in the history of this esteemed sporting event. Even before the commencement of the race, tensions between the competing universities have escalated significantly, impacting the planned race schedule.
Race Schedule Adjustments
The women’s boat race is still slated to commence at 1:20 pm, followed by the men’s race at 2:20 pm as originally planned. However, preparatory trial races initially scheduled for the morning on the River Thames have now been cancelled. This alteration to the schedule is a direct consequence of an ongoing eligibility dispute concerning three Cambridge rowers selected for the team.
Eligibility Row Focuses on Cambridge Rowers
The disagreement centers on the eligibility of Cambridge students Matt Heywood, Molly Foxell, and Kate Cowley. Oxford University formally challenged the selection of these three individuals, asserting their ineligibility based on their enrollment in the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) program. Oxford contended that the PGCE, being a certificate rather than a degree-level qualification, disqualified them from participation.
Cambridge University refuted these objections, leading to the involvement of an independent panel to adjudicate the dispute. The independent panel ultimately ruled against the Cambridge rowers, declaring them ineligible despite prior instances of PGCE students participating in the boat races.

Siobhan Cassidy, Chair of the Boat Race Company, emphasized that the onus for regulation review rests with the participating teams. She stated, “The clubs themselves agree upon the rules governing the competition.”

Hodge added, “It resembles a trivial argument over a children’s game. This viewpoint is not intended to diminish the rigorous standards and commitment to rowing; it is demanding, yet fundamentally, participation is voluntary. Established rules exist and should be respected for fair competition.”
