Hilary Swank Hints at Possible Return to “Yellowjackets” After Season 3 Cliffhanger
Despite her character’s seemingly conclusive storyline in the latest season, actress Hilary Swank has expressed interest in returning to the acclaimed psychological thriller series “Yellowjackets.” Season 3 saw Swank portray the adult Melissa in a brief but pivotal appearance, leaving fans questioning if this was truly the end for her character within the Paramount+ and Showtime hit show.
Spoiler Warning: Plot Details Ahead
In a season filled with shocking narrative developments, Melissa, portrayed by Swank, featured in just two episodes but exerted a considerable influence on the storyline. Her actions included a stunning plot twist involving the demise of a central figure. Notably, Melissa’s departure from the scene of the crime was ambiguous, fueling speculation about a potential comeback in future seasons.
Cast’s Optimism and Swank’s Statement
While “Yellowjackets” has not yet received official confirmation for another season from Showtime as of this report, the cast conveyed optimism at the Season 3 finale event held in North Hollywood, California, on Thursday, April 10.
During the red carpet event, The Post engaged in conversation with Swank, an Academy Award recipient, inquiring about her willingness to reprise her role should a Season 4 be commissioned.

“I really liked everybody a lot. I had a great time. I feel like the writing is really great, and it’s a challenge, and, you know, I like to be challenged as an actor, and I feel that the show, it really works,” Swank elaborated.
Challenges of Portraying Melissa
Despite her enjoyment in playing Melissa, the two-time Academy Award winner acknowledged the demanding aspects of the role, particularly the extensive dialogue.
“It’s really rare when you get scenes that are 8 pages long or 10 pages long. It’s super rare. You usually have like a couple pages, but we had monologues and like a lot of meat to chew. No pun intended,” she remarked to The Post, highlighting the substantial scene lengths and complex material.
Swank also mentioned the relatively recent introduction of her character and the limited timeframe she had to fully grasp Melissa’s context, given her limited prior viewing of the series.
Melissa’s Backstory and Season 3 Arc
Melissa’s character is rooted in the backstory of the “Yellowjackets” soccer team, whose harrowing plane crash in the 1990s led to acts of survival, including cannibalism. The narrative structure of the show interweaves these past teenage experiences with the characters’ present-day adult lives.
Initially presumed deceased by her former teammates, Melissa resurfaces decades later when adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) discovers she is alive.
“That was really a challenge without having a lot backstory and a lot of time to prepare,” Swank reiterated to The Post, emphasizing the hurdles of stepping into a role with an existing history within a complex series.
“They called me like a few weeks before filming,” she disclosed, noting the abbreviated notice she received before commencing her work, which “wouldn’t have had time” for her to view all prior episodes of Seasons 1 and 2.
Key Plot Points and Character Fate
Upon learning of Melissa’s survival, adult Shauna makes an attempt on her life, leading to a confrontation that echoes their past survival struggles. In a disturbing scene, Shauna bites Melissa’s arm and compels her to consume her own flesh.
Swank playfully addressed this intense scene at the recent event.
“It was silicone,” she clarified with a touch of humor. “I didn’t really eat my arm. I’m not method. Thank God.”
Melissa ultimately escapes Shauna but is subsequently encountered by Misty (Christina Ricci), Tai (Tawny Cypress), and a ailing Van (Lauren Ambrose), who is battling terminal cancer.
The situation escalates when Van attempts to murder Melissa, but ultimately refrains, a decision that tragically leads to Van being fatally stabbed by Melissa. Tai’s discovery of Van’s mortal wound results in a poignant and emotional scene as Tai mourns the loss of her longtime partner.
Ricci also spoke with The Post, sharing her personal emotional response to a different co-star’s character death in the series.
