Isabella Nichols Advances in El Salvador Surf Competition, Missing Twin Sister’s Wedding

Australian surfer Isabella Nichols is making waves at the World Surf League (WSL) event in El Salvador, progressing closer to securing her first title since 2022 at Punta Roca. This significant competition, unfolding off the coast of El Salvador, was initially anticipated to be a celebratory weekend for Nichols, envisioning herself at her twin sister’s wedding rather than battling for victory in the surf.

Weather-Related Delays and Emotional Rollercoaster

Lay days, often considered a frustration for surfers due to event postponements, have been particularly impactful at this El Salvador Pro. The competition, which commenced on April 2nd and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday (AEST) – the final day of its designated window – has faced multiple disruptions due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Nichols described the week as an “emotional rollercoaster” due to the unpredictable schedule and delays caused by poor surf conditions.

Sacrifices and Dedication

The scheduling setbacks mean Nichols, aged 27, will unfortunately miss her twin sister Helena’s wedding. Despite this personal conflict, Nichols demonstrated exceptional skill in her quarter-final, overcoming Bettylou Sakura Johnson and setting the stage for a semi-final clash against fellow Australian competitor, Molly Picklum.

“As athletes, and indeed anyone working away from home, sacrifices are inevitable,” Nichols commented, acknowledging her season’s best performance amidst personal commitments. “This event has required perhaps my most significant personal sacrifice to date.”

In a heartfelt message broadcast from El Salvador, Nichols added, “To my parents, my sister, George, and everyone back home, I wish you a truly wonderful day. This performance, Helena, is dedicated to you.”

Triumph Over Top-Ranked Surfers

Nichols has delivered impressive performances throughout the competition, notably triumphing over Caroline Marks, the 2023 world champion, in the round of 16. Marks had been aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive El Salvador title.

Renewed Focus on Surfing Career

Nichols, who considered stepping back from professional surfing in 2023 to pursue engineering studies and her ambition to develop wave pool technology, revealed how thoughts of Helena provided her with strength in her victory over Johnson (scoring 13.77 to 11.33).

“During a lull in the waves, as I was waiting out there,” she recounted, “I felt like Helena was supporting me, sending this calm, and that everything was unfolding as it should.”

Expressing her deep sentiments, Nichols concluded, “Though I am there in spirit only, I want her to know I love her incredibly much and eagerly anticipate giving her a massive hug soon.”

Upcoming Semi-Finals

World No. 2 ranked Molly Picklum secured her place in her fourth consecutive tour semi-final by defeating Brisa Hennessy with a score of 12.34 to 10.26. The other women’s semi-final will feature American surfer Caitlin Simmers competing against Gabriela Bryan from Hawaii.

Men’s Competition Update

In the men’s division, Ethan Ewing was the last remaining Australian in the quarter-finals, but ultimately faced defeat against Crosby Colapinto. Colapinto from the USA is set to compete in his first semi-final of the year against South African surfer Matthew McGillivray. The other men’s semi-final will see Jordy Smith and Cole Houshmand go head-to-head for a spot in the final.
