Early Birdies and Leaderboard Shifts at the Masters

Former champions are making their presence known early in the first round of the Masters, with three joining the leaders with opening birdies. Mike Weir, the 2003 victor and first left-handed player to triumph at Augusta, birdied the 3rd hole. Zach Johnson, the 2007 champion, and Danny Willett, the surprise 2016 winner, each gained a stroke on the 2nd. However, early frontrunner Davis Riley has encountered setbacks, becoming the first player this week to fall victim to the formidable, deep bunkers guarding the left side of the 5th fairway. A bogey on the 5th, quickly followed by another on the par-three 6th due to a subpar chip from the left swale, has pushed him to +1. Such is the challenge of Augusta National.

Cool Conditions Affecting Early Play at Augusta

The cool morning temperatures in Augusta are contributing to the subdued start in birdie activity. Jhonattan Vegas, at the 3rd, and Michael Kim, at the 2nd, are the only players besides Davis Riley to achieve a birdie thus far. Given the forecast of warmer conditions later in the day, and the potential for wind and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon, the early starters may face a disadvantageous draw. This could be favorable news for players with later tee times, such as Rory McIlroy. Optimistically, the predicted thunderstorm will bypass Augusta National, paving the way for a sunny and dry weekend, albeit not particularly warm.

Højgaard’s Mixed Start at Masters Debut

Nicolai Højgaard, making his second Masters appearance after debuting last year, is experiencing a rollercoaster first round. In his prior appearance, he carded an impressive 67 on Thursday, ultimately finishing in a commendable tie for 16th – his best major championship result to date. This Thursday presents a more erratic performance. A missed up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the 1st hole resulted in a bogey. This was compounded by a severe hook into the trees on the 2nd, forcing a penalty drop and leading to a double bogey. A birdie on the short par-four 3rd hole recovered some ground, bringing him back to +2. The 24-year-old currently finds himself at the lower end of the tightly packed leaderboard.

Masters Traditions and Early Leaders Emerge

The Masters is steeped in cherished traditions that mark the start of each tournament. From the iconic drive down Magnolia Lane to the Amateur Dinner, the Champions Dinner, the playful skipping of balls across the water on the 16th, the Par-three contest, and the Honorary Starters—these are all integral parts of the Masters experience. And invariably, someone often emerges unexpectedly to seize an early lead, etching their name in Masters history as a first-round leader. This year, that honor belongs to Davis Riley. Taking the opening tee shot of the 2025 Masters Tournament, Riley followed a par on the first hole with a birdie on the par-five 2nd, capitalizing on a precise wedge shot to within ten feet. This Masters debut marks a significant introduction to golf’s most prestigious major for the 28-year-old from Mississippi. A captivating start, but historically, unless Riley defies odds as Fuzzy Zoeller did in 1979, the initial summit may be short-lived for a debutant.
