A recent analysis reveals that in 2022, global plastic waste generation reached approximately 268 million tonnes. Alarmingly, only a small fraction, about 14 percent or 38 million tonnes, was recycled. The vast majority of discarded plastics ended up incinerated or, more frequently, deposited in landfills.
