Global Plastic Waste Recycling Stagnant Despite Rising Concerns

A recent analysis reveals that in 2022, global plastic waste generation reached approximately 268 million tonnes. Alarmingly, only a small fraction, about 14 percent or 38 million tonnes, was recycled. The vast majority of discarded plastics ended up incinerated or, more frequently, deposited in landfills.

Dismal Recycling Rates Persist

Despite escalating apprehension regarding the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on both the environment and public health, worldwide plastic recycling rates have remained largely unchanged for many years. This raises a critical question: Is it time to concede defeat in the effort to effectively recycle plastics?
