U.S. President Trump Announces Tariff Adjustments
U.S. President Donald Trump has declared significant modifications to his administration’s trade strategy, including a temporary cessation of recently enacted reciprocal tariffs and a notable escalation of duties on Chinese products. The President proclaimed a 90-day suspension of the “reciprocal” tariff initiative, enacted in response to appeals from numerous nations seeking trade discussions. Concurrently, tariffs on goods originating from China are slated to increase to 125%, citing what he described as a “lack of respect” from Beijing.
Reciprocal Tariffs Paused for 90 Days
President Trump issued a statement explaining the decision to temporarily halt the reciprocal tariffs. He stated, “Based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have contacted Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the [US Trade Representative], to engage in negotiations regarding Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and considering that these Countries have not retaliated against the United States in any manner, shape, or form, at my strong suggestion, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE.”
During this 90-day period, a “substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff” of 10% will be in effect, also beginning immediately, according to the President.
Tariffs on Chinese Imports Increased
In a separate announcement posted on Truth Social, President Trump detailed the decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports. “Based on the lack of respect that China has demonstrated to the World’s Markets, I am hereby increasing the Tariff levied on China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” he stated.
President Trump further asserted, “At some juncture, hopefully in the near future, China will recognize that the era of exploiting the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer tenable or acceptable. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Market Reaction to Tariff Adjustments
The announcement of a pause in higher reciprocal tariffs, which had impacted approximately 60 countries earlier, prompted an immediate surge in market activity.
Background on US-China Trade Tariffs
Previously, China announced an 84% tariff on imports from the U.S. following the imposition of a 104% tariff by the Trump administration on Chinese goods entering the United States.
White House Press Secretary Comments
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the tariff increases against China in a recent news conference. She stated that President Trump’s actions were a response to perceived aggression, saying, “when you punch at the United States of America, President Trump is going to punch back harder”.
Negotiations and Global Response
Ms. Leavitt indicated that over 75 countries had reached out to the Trump administration to initiate negotiations, resulting in a high volume of requests.
“In the interim, there will be a 90-day pause in the reciprocal tariffs as these negotiations continue, and the tariff level will be reduced to a universal 10%,” she clarified.
Media Coverage and Strategic Objectives
Leavitt also commented on media interpretations of the situation, suggesting that journalists had “failed to see what President Trump is doing here.”
“You attempted to assert that the rest of the world would align more closely with China, when, in reality, you have witnessed the opposite,” she remarked.
Focus on “Bad Actors”
Another administration official, Bessent, added that the tariff decisions are directed at “bad actors” in international trade, rather than being solely focused on China.
Tariff Pause Not Due to Market Reaction
Bessent also insisted that the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs was not a consequence of market responses to the initial tariff announcements.
“What I am certain of is that what China is doing will have a greater impact on their economy than on ours,” he stated. “The rest of the world now comprehends.”
