Elton John’s New Album Features Profoundly Personal Track on Mortality and Love
Music icon Elton John recently unveiled his collaborative album with acclaimed artist Brandi Carlile, titled Who Believes in Angels?, released on April 4. Among the collection of songs, one composition stands out for its deeply intimate exploration of themes such as aging, mortality, and various forms of affection, encompassing both romantic and platonic love.
Emotional Depth of ‘When This World is Done with Me’
In a candid discussion during a recent interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM, Elton John openly discussed the significant emotional impact of the track ‘When This World is Done with Me’. He provided insights into the song’s creation and the powerful sentiments it evokes.
Studio Breakdown During Recording
Recounting the initial studio session, Elton John described his reaction upon first playing the song. “I started to sing, began playing the verse, and thought, ‘This is really lovely, I appreciate this,’ and I felt pleased with the piano’s sound,” he stated.
However, the emotional current intensified as he progressed. “Then I reached the chorus, and by the time I had finished singing it, the meaning of the lyrics became undeniably clear to me, and I simplyβ¦ I just became overwhelmed,” Elton confessed, revealing the depth of his emotional response.
Adding to the impact of the moment, he emphasized, “That has genuinely never occurred to me before in my entire songwriting experience. Truly, never.”

Lyrics Evoked Deep Emotion, Halting Session
John further elaborated on the profound effect of the lyrics and their underlying message, explaining that he was so deeply moved that he was unable to continue the recording session. He had to postpone completion of the song until the following day. “It was upsetting because the idea of passing away does concern meβ¦ and it simply struck a chord,” he admitted.
Bernie Taupin’s Lyrical Contribution
The poignant lyrics of the song β “When this old world is done with me/Just know I came this far/Scatter me among the stars/When I close my eyes/Release me like an ocean wave/Return me to the tide” β were penned by Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s long-term creative partner for over half a century.
Elton John characterized the song as intrinsically linked to their enduring professional relationship and personal bond. “The words are exceptionally beautiful, and they aren’t solely about me. I believe they also reflect Bernie’s sentiments. They are about us β the relationship we’ve cultivated, the beauty we have experienced together,” he reflected.
Clarifying Health Amidst Mortality Themes
Notwithstanding the song’s thematic focus on mortality, Elton John was quick to assure listeners of his robust health.
Reassurances of Excellent Health
“It was unsettling because contemplating passing away does lead me to consider, you know, what will happen to my children and David,” he explained, referring to his husband, David Furnish, and their two sons.
However, he firmly stated, “But in reality, I am in the best physical condition I have ever been. I recently received remarkably positive medical test results. So, I am certainly not on the verge of passing away.”
He concluded, “Occasionally, thoughts arise like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to leave this world. I want to remain with my boys.’ And the timing of such events is unpredictable. But for the foreseeable future, I am definitely not going anywhere.”
