Total War: Warhammer 3 AI Campaign Enhancements Underway

Creative Assembly is refining the campaign artificial intelligence (AI) for Total War: Warhammer 3, a strategy title renowned for its vast scale and intense battles. Recent beta testing phases have highlighted and addressed specific issues, including a bug causing the AI to adopt an overly defensive posture due to exaggerated reactions to hero units. Following the initial beta, a second suite of improvements has been outlined in a detailed blog post by Creative Assembly, promising a more engaging and dynamic experience.

Reduced Anti-Player Bias and Adjusted Distance Scaling

Among the primary enhancements is a planned reduction in anti-player bias. This adjustment aims to normalize AI behavior, ensuring that computer-controlled factions perceive and react to human players similarly to how they interact with other AI factions. Currently, the AI tends to overstate the threat posed by human players, leading to skewed strategic decision-making.

Furthermore, modifications to distance scaling mechanics are set to encourage more proactive AI behavior. Principal technical designer Radoslav Borisov illustrated this point, stating, “One example is the Southlands World’s Edge Mountains province; the AI struggles to invade it normally.” These alterations are designed to mitigate the AI’s tendency to remain static and inactive within its territories, leading to more frequent and logical off-map excursions.

Faction Potential Rebalancing

Creative Assembly is also addressing faction potential, acknowledging player feedback regarding the desire for greater diversity and resilience among minor factions. Underperforming factions will receive buffs to enhance their survivability and competitiveness. The factions slated to receive these boosts include:

  • Clan Moulder
  • Warhost of the Apocalypse
  • Hag Graef
  • Itza
  • The Bloody Handz
  • Caravan of Blue Roses
  • Puppets of Misrule
  • Bonerattlaz

Conversely, factions identified as consistently overperforming will experience a reduction in their potential, aiming to prevent map dominance by a select few. Factions facing potential reductions are:

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

  • Oracles of Tzeentch
  • Blooded Wanderers
  • Cult of Pleasure
  • Khemri

These adjustments are intended to create a more balanced and unpredictable campaign environment, reducing instances of runaway factions and fostering greater long-term campaign dynamism.

AI Bug Fixes for Campaign Mechanics

A series of bug fixes targeting AI faction-specific campaign mechanics are also forthcoming. These fixes are designed to ensure that AI factions utilize their unique features and systems more effectively:

  • Sisters of Twilight: Will actively pursue specific item sets within the Forge of Daith.
  • Disciples of Hashut, The Legion of Azgorh, and The Warhost of Zharr: Improved navigation of the Hell-Forge, prioritizing high-tier manufactory options.
  • Vampire Counts factions: Will prioritize Bloodline selection based on thematic alignment.
  • Bloodletting Mechanic: Enhanced AI handling for improved decision-making.
  • [Realms of Chaos Specific] Cathay factions: Will actively recapture bastion settlements.
  • [Realms of Chaos Specific] Kurgan Warband: Improved target selection after bastion settlement destruction.

Participate in the Beta and Future Updates

These campaign AI refinements will be implemented as part of a new beta, accessible to players via Steam opt-in. Senior community manager Steve Coleman indicated further developments are in progress, stating, “we have a team internally starting to explore changes that we think we can make to Sieges, and are hoping to bring you more on that in the summer.” The developers are actively seeking player participation in the beta to further refine and enhance the Total War: Warhammer 3 campaign experience.
