Rami Malek Takes on Unlikely Spy Role in ‘The Amateur’ Remake
Based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel, this reimagining of the original film, The Amateur, has endured a lengthy period of development. Initially envisioned with Hugh Jackman in the lead role of Charles Heller, a cerebral CIA cryptographer ill-suited for field operations, the part has now been filled by Rami Malek. In this 2025 rendition, Malek embodies the improbable vigilante spy driven to avenge his wife’s murder – a compelling premise that, regrettably, the cinematic execution fails to fully realize, resulting in a somewhat soporific viewing experience.
Unconvincing Transformation
From the outset, the portrayal of Malek as a socially inept intellectual lacks credibility. The character abruptly transitions from a composed aeroplane enthusiast in his comfortable home, shared with his wife, to a dispirited arrival at Langley, seemingly slighted by the indifference of Jon Bernthal’s superfluous colleague. This character reappears fleetingly later, in a different global setting, suggesting a potentially more substantial role in an earlier version of the narrative. Briefly trained by Laurence Fishburne’s exaggerated CIA field instructor, Heller embarks for Europe, intent on lethal retribution against the terrorists responsible for his wife’s death, played by Rachel Brosnahan.
Missed Potential in Spy Thriller
Disappointingly, The Amateur transforms what aspires to be a Jason Bourne-esque thriller, culminating in a desaturated and anticlimactic resolution, into a protracted and tedious ordeal. The narrative framework possessed the potential to become a dynamic blend of John Wick and Kill Bill, had it embraced a more sensational and engaging approach. However, deficient in compelling action sequences and relatable characters, this unremarkable espionage movie is ultimately one to avoid.
UK Cinema Release Date
The Amateur will be released in UK cinemas on April 11, 2025.
