Russian Drone Strike in Dnipro Kills Civilians, Including Child

A Russian drone strike on Dnipro, Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of three individuals, among them a young girl and an elderly woman. The assault, which occurred late on April 16, also wounded 30 people, including five children. This incident follows a deadly missile attack in Sumy over the weekend, which claimed the lives of 34.

Details of the Dnipro Attack

Casualties and Impact

Serhii Lysak, Governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, confirmed the fatalities and reported that homes, educational facilities, cultural sites, and vehicles were targeted in the drone attack. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov stated that injured residents are receiving medical care in city hospitals, with one person in critical condition. He added via Telegram that a Shahed drone narrowly missed striking the city hall.

Emergency Response and Damage

According to Governor Lysak, fires erupted across Dnipro in the aftermath of the strike. Emergency responders worked overnight to extinguish the blazes.

Residential buildings suffered significant damage, with windows shattered and roofs torn off by the explosions.

Among the injured children were infants and young children, including a nine-month-old baby, a six-year-old, and an eleven-year-old.

Support for Survivors and Calls for Air Defense

Local authorities are providing psychological assistance to survivors, many of whom were asleep when the drones struck.

Ukraine has renewed its appeals for increased Western air defense systems to safeguard civilians from future attacks.

Context and International Reaction

Previous Attack in Sumy

This strike follows a previous Russian attack on Sumy on April 13, which killed at least 34 and injured over 100.

Condemnation and Diplomatic Efforts

European leaders publicly condemned the earlier Sumy attack, which took place on Palm Sunday, describing it as “heartbreaking.”

Ukraine asserts that this latest series of strikes demonstrates Russia’s lack of intent to cease its offensive.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously supported a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, but Moscow has thus far declined to agree.

Negotiations involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia are ongoing in Saudi Arabia in an attempt to mediate a resolution.
