German Farmer’s Wedding Ring Unearthed in Cow’s Stomach at Local Butcher Shop

In an unusual turn of events, a German farmer, Johannes Brandhuber, had his wedding ring, which was lost several months prior, unexpectedly discovered at a local butcher shop. Brandhuber, who misplaced the ring while feeding oat silage to his cattle on his farm in Simbach am Inn, southern Germany, believed it was gone for good. However, the missing wedding ring resurfaced at a butcher’s in Vilshofen an der Donau, approximately 50 kilometers away.

Lost Ring Found During Butchering Process

Josef Steinleitner, a butcher in Vilshofen an der Donau, contacted Brandhuber four months after the ring vanished with remarkable news. Steinleitner’s staff had located the ring inside the rumen of a cow named Herzal, a Bavarian term of endearment meaning “little heart.”

Butcher’s Unique Discovery

Steinleitner, a butcher with over 40 years of experience, conveyed his astonishment at the extraordinary find. He explained that the discovery occurred due to his 135-year-old family business still practicing manual slaughtering methods. “I have never witnessed anything comparable. It is truly unique,” Steinleitner stated. He further noted that small metallic objects, such as screws, frequently end up in a cow’s rumen, a large compartment within their digestive system, highlighting the improbable nature of finding the ring.

Farmer’s Reaction to the Ring’s Retrieval

Brandhuber admitted to having all but relinquished hope of ever finding the ring, while his wife remained optimistic about its return. He recounted thoroughly searching his barn after noticing the ring was missing, but without success, and subsequently purchasing a replacement ring.

Condition of Recovered Ring

The recovered wedding ring was substantially worn due to its months-long sojourn in the cow’s rumen, with the engraved initials only faintly discernible. The cow, Herzal, was named for a distinctive heart-shaped white marking on its forehead.
