Florida Teenager Found Dead in Nature Preserve; Ex-Boyfriend Arrested

In Hernando County, Florida, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly fatally stabbed in a brutal assault and abandoned in a nature preserve. The discovery occurred two weeks after her sixteenth birthday. Authorities have arrested her former boyfriend in connection with the homicide. The body of Abbriella Elliott was discovered within the Cypress Lakes Preserve Trailhead, prompting a murder investigation.

Discovery of the Body

On the morning of March 27, a hiker found the remains of Abbriella Elliott approximately 50 to 100 feet inside the Cypress Lakes Preserve Trailhead in Hernando County, according to reports from the Hernando Sun. The grim discovery initiated an immediate investigation by local law enforcement.

Initial Investigation Details

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated that a witness reported seeing Elliott leave her residence around 1:00 a.m. on the morning of her death. Investigators believe she was meeting an individual, now suspected to be her killer. Sheriff Nienhuis addressed the nature of the crime during a press conference:

  • The attack was described as “very violent,” indicating a crime of passion.
  • Detectives quickly determined that the incident was not a random act of violence.
  • An “edged weapon” is believed to have been used in the fatal assault.

Arrest in Connection to the Murder

Cameron Cubel, also 16, was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder on March 28. The arrest came swiftly after the commencement of the investigation into Elliott’s tragic death, Fox 13 Tampa reported.

Relationship Between the Victim and the Suspect

Sheriff Nienhuis confirmed that the victim and the accused knew each other but initially withheld further details about their relationship. However, Abbriella Elliott’s parents disclosed to 10 Tampa Bay that Cubel was their daughter’s former boyfriend. They indicated the pair had ended their relationship approximately six months prior to the incident. Elliott’s parents also confirmed the proximity of the tragedy to her recent birthday, noting it occurred just two weeks afterward.

In the wake of the tragedy, Abbriella Elliott’s mother, Danyel Caltagirone, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs. She remembered her daughter as a vibrant and joyful person:

“Abby’s spirit shone brightly, and she had an extraordinary ability to make others feel loved and cherished. Her laughter and warmth filled every room, and she had an unwavering ability to lift the spirits of everyone she met,” her family expressed in her obituary, further highlighting her positive impact.

Vigil Held for Abbriella Elliott

A prayer vigil took place on March 30 to honor Abbriella Elliott’s life. Her stepfather, Leo Lind, conveyed that she would have been deeply touched by the large number of people attending to celebrate her memory, Bay News 9 reported.

“The light she brings to people, her smiles, she’s just fun to be around,” he stated, reflecting on her positive influence.

“I’m just so happy, and I know she’s here with us, and she saw the turnout.”
