Disc Golfer Protests Transgender Athlete Inclusion at Nashville Tournament

Viral video footage shows a female disc golf competitor declining to compete against a transgender opponent at a Nashville event, echoing a similar protest by a fencer earlier in the week. The incident has ignited further debate surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Unprecedented Protest on the Disc Golf Course

The notable video captures Abigail Wilson, a participant in a Tennessee disc golf competition, stepping onto the course to face Natalie Ryan, a transgender player. Wilson, in a move of defiance, simulated taking her shot before addressing spectators, declaring, “Female divisions must be protected. This is unjust. I refuse to participate.”

Wilson then gathered her belongings and exited the tournament, receiving applause from onlookers.

Athlete Justifies Protest as Stand for Fairness

Wilson later reinforced her stance on Friday, sharing the video along with an extensive caption. She concluded by stating, “Today I likely ended my career, and I accept that outcome because this issue transcends my personal aspirations.”

Explaining her motivations, Wilson elaborated, “Today I refused to compete at the Music City Open. Female athletes are entitled to have their designated gender division safeguarded. This is fundamentally unfair.”

“I have dedicated considerable effort to reach the Disc Golf Pro Tour, but sacrificing my career and past achievements is a worthwhile trade-off if it contributes to positive change for other women, daughters, nieces, and the future of women’s sports.”

Safety Concerns Raised Prior to Protest

“If you acknowledge the inherent injustice of biological males competing in protected female categories in sports, now is the moment to voice your dissent and assert your position,” Wilson urged.

She continued, “My protest today stemmed from anxiety about competing with an openly transgender player on tour, particularly given the anticipated demonstrations this year and reported threats of violence at last year’s event.”

“Following a discussion with a DGPT staff member the previous day, it became clear that they were unwilling to accommodate my request for an earlier tee time due to my safety concerns on the course.”

“They assured me of bag checks, police presence, and security at the event. However, upon arrival this morning, there was no visible security or police personnel. Furthermore, I was granted entry despite lacking my credentials. There were no security measures in place.”

DGPT Responds to Protest, Supports Right to Expression

Ryan has not yet issued a public response to the incident. The Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) released a comprehensive statement on Friday addressing the situation.

The DGPT affirmed that Wilson would not face penalties for her protest, while maintaining their position regarding event safety.

“The DGPT upholds the right of all competitors to protest and express their views, and no disciplinary action, formal or informal, will be taken regarding yesterday’s protest,” the organization stated.

“No rules or policies were infringed. We encourage players to act according to their convictions, and Ms. Wilson is welcome to compete alongside all other participants. The DGPT hopes to see Ms. Wilson return to a future event.”

Continued Advocacy for Female Athletes

Wilson remained firm in her convictions on Saturday, posting another statement on Instagram, saying, “If you wish to contribute, please advocate for female athletes at every opportunity. Share your opinions with the PDGA and the DGPT. Thank you all for the overwhelming support from the community. I apologize if I am unable to respond to everyone’s messages at this time. I will endeavor to acknowledge everyone, and I appreciate all of your support!”

Financial Strain of Professional Disc Golf Highlighted

She further explained, “I work as a tile mason. I endure physically demanding, laborious, and unclean work to even afford tour participation.”

“Every cent invested in my disc golf career has been personally funded, driven by determination and perseverance to ascend to the highest levels of competition. Contrary to popular belief, disc golf is not financially rewarding unless you are consistently ranked in the top 10.”

Previous Protest by Fencer Against Transgender Opponent

Earlier in the week, USA fencer Stephanie Turner was disqualified from a tournament after kneeling and refusing to compete against a transgender competitor, illustrating the growing tension surrounding this issue in various sports.
