Traveller Hails Devon Village as “Prettiest in UK,” Evoking Greek Isles

A solo female traveller has lauded a quaint village in Devon, asserting it could be the “prettiest village in the UK,” drawing comparisons between its cobbled streets, crystal-clear waters, and the scenic charm of Greece. The influencer showcased Clovelly, a hidden gem in the UK, highlighting its picturesque scenery and unique character as a top tourist destination.

Social Media Spotlight on Clovelly’s Charm

Lana, known as Storky Adventures on social media platform TikTok, shared a video clip of her visit to the idyllic Devon location, describing it as a “dreamy little place with the most picturesque scenery.” Her short video commences with a panoramic view of the coastline before she descends a cobbled path towards the beach.

She continued her exploration through the steep village streets, noting the “charming cottages” and pausing to enjoy a traditional cream tea. “I can’t believe this is in Devon,” she remarked, identifying the location as Clovelly, a fishing village situated in the northern part of the county.

“It felt like stepping back in time, with no vehicles permitted, and possessed a Greek ambiance with its cobbled streets, brilliant white dwellings, and floral baskets overlooking the turquoise sea,” Lana enthusiastically expressed.

Visitor Advisory for Exploring Clovelly

For individuals planning a visit, Lana advised: “It’s located on a steep cliff, so be prepared for a considerable walk. Avoid wearing flip-flops, unlike myself, as navigating the steep cobbled paths proved challenging when mine broke.”

Lana also mentioned a visitor fee for entry into the village, as it is a privately owned estate, clarifying that the charge includes parking. She concluded, “There appears to be a selection of holiday accommodations available, which I am keen to investigate for a return visit soon.”

Public Reactions to Clovelly’s Appeal

Comments from other TikTok users echoed Lana’s positive impressions. One user, recounting their own experience, wrote: “Beautiful Clovelly, definitely worth the £9 entry fee per adult, absolutely stunning. The £9 ticket is valid for seven days, making it worthwhile to explore the gardens and purchase a plant.”

Another commenter stated: “It’s a fantastic place, even though you have to pay to enter, it is justifiable. Even the waterfall on the beach is worth seeing.” A third admitted: “I adore it here! However, the uphill walk in the summer months can be arduous.”

A fourth respondent concurred: “Great location – if you are comfortable with walking up and down steep hills!” Another individual remarked: “So beautiful, you would hardly believe it’s in the UK.”

Clovelly’s Historical Significance

The village’s history is detailed on a dedicated website, stating: “Originally, the estate belonged to William the Conqueror, King of England, and was gifted to his wife. It maintained royal connections until 1242 when the Giffard family first acquired it. Clovelly remained largely unknown to the wider world until the mid-19th century.”

The website further explains, “Charles Kingsley’s novel ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, played a significant role in attracting visitors. In 1884, Christine Hamlyn inherited the estate and married in 1889.”

“She and her husband undertook renovations of numerous village cottages, explaining the presence of her initials throughout. The current owner of Clovelly, The Hon. John Rous, is her great grand-nephew. A portrait of Christine Hamlyn in her wedding dress is displayed in the Hamlyn’s Room at the New Inn.”
