US Defense Secretary Hegseth Meets Philippine President Marcos Amid China Tensions

Manila, Philippines – United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth engaged in discussions with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila, emphasizing the necessity for both nations to stand united against the challenges posed by China. The meeting underscores the deepening defense cooperation between the US and the Philippines in the face of escalating tensions in the South China Sea.

Focus on Regional Deterrence

Secretary Hegseth’s visit to the Presidential Palace initiated a tour of Pacific allies, occurring amidst an ongoing controversy surrounding leaked military strategy documents. During the meeting, Hegseth articulated the importance of deterrence in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly for the Philippines, considering what he termed “threats from Communist China.”

“Deterrence is crucial globally, but especially in this region, within your nation, given the concerns originating from Communist China,” he stated.

South China Sea and Regional Security

The Manila visit precedes subsequent stops in Tokyo and Iwo Jima, a World War II battle site. This tour follows months of confrontations involving Philippine and Chinese vessels in the contested South China Sea. Beijing asserts expansive claims over this vital maritime route, despite an international tribunal ruling invalidating these claims.

“Allies must stand together to prevent conflict and ensure freedom of navigation, whether referred to as the South China Sea or the West Philippine Sea,” Hegseth affirmed. He further added, “Peace through strength is a tangible reality.”

Strengthening Asia-Pacific Alliances

This diplomatic trip is aimed at reinforcing alliances within the Asia-Pacific region as tensions rise with Beijing. Concurrently, Secretary Hegseth is facing calls for resignation from Democratic lawmakers, with a Republican congressman also advocating for an independent investigation due to the aforementioned document leak.

Signal Chat Leak Controversy

The controversy stems from Secretary Hegseth’s disclosure of details pertaining to strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen via the messaging application Signal. This information was shared within a group of senior administration officials, inadvertently including a journalist who was added to the chat by mistake.

Meeting with Philippine Counterpart

Secretary Hegseth is scheduled to meet with his Philippine counterpart, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, on Friday to further discuss defense cooperation and regional security issues.

Deepening US-Philippine Defense Cooperation

In response to China’s increasing influence, the US has been actively reinforcing its alliances with Asia-Pacific nations, notably the Philippines. Manila and Washington have been enhancing their defense partnership since President Marcos assumed office in 2022 and adopted a more assertive stance against Beijing’s extensive claims in the South China Sea.

Over recent years, high-ranking US officials have cautioned that an “armed attack” against the Philippines in the disputed waterway would trigger the mutual defense treaty between the two countries. They have expanded intelligence sharing and increased the number of Philippine bases accessible to US troops to nine.

Strategic Importance Amid Regional Tensions

Given the Philippines’ strategic location near Taiwan and its surrounding waters, Manila’s collaboration is deemed vital in the event of potential conflict with China in the region.

Military Exercises Underway

Secretary Hegseth’s visit coincides with ongoing bilateral military exercises, which are slated to expand in April to incorporate naval and air force components, further solidifying the defense alliance.

Trump’s Support Amidst Pressure

Despite growing pressure concerning the Signal leak incident, former President Donald Trump has voiced his support for Secretary Hegseth. “Hegseth is performing admirably; he had no involvement in this,” stated the former president when questioned about whether the defense secretary should consider resigning. He also reiterated his assertion that no classified information was compromised in the breach, adding that National Security Advisor Mike Waltz “accepted responsibility” for the error of adding the journalist Goldberg to the group chat that included Secretary Hegseth, the Vice-President, JD Vance, the National Intelligence Director, Tulsi Gabbard, and other officials.
