Raducanu Receives On-Court Medical Attention During Miami Open Loss

In her Miami Open quarter-final match against Jessica Pegula, Emma Raducanu required medical evaluation on court after reporting feeling ‘dizzy and faint’. The British tennis star, aged 22, underwent a medical assessment beside the court in Florida, appearing visibly unwell amidst the challenging conditions in the Sunshine State. This health concern seemingly impacted her performance as her impressive run at the prestigious Miami Open was halted by American player Jessica Pegula, who secured victory with scores of 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2. The Miami Open witnessed Emma Raducanu‘s best performance at the event to date before this medical timeout and eventual defeat by Jessica Pegula.

Raducanu Attributes Condition to Humidity

Following her match, Raducanu acknowledged the demanding, humid conditions, with temperatures reaching approximately 27C, as a contributing factor to her ailment. “I just felt really dizzy. I felt faint. I don’t know,” Raducanu stated post-match. “It was very humid out there, and with the extended wait times, it was perhaps an accumulation of factors. The physicality of the points, prolonged rallies, and heavy conditions all played a role. I’m unsure how I managed to regroup in the second set, but I definitely experienced difficulties in the third.”

Medical Procedure and Match Resumption

As part of the standard protocol, the British player had her vital signs monitored, including blood pressure checks, as medical personnel attempted to lower her body temperature. To aid in cooling down, Raducanu received ice towels and ice applied to her legs and back. After a brief pause for treatment, play was able to continue.

Setback After Promising Second Set Performance

Prior to the interruption, Raducanu held a commanding 5-2 lead in the second set and seemed poised to force a decisive third set against the home favorite. However, she conceded two consecutive games before the medical timeout. Despite the setback, Raducanu regained composure after the brief delay and ultimately won the second set tiebreak 7-3.

Pegula Seizes Decisive Set

Nevertheless, Raducanu appeared to suffer from depleted energy levels, and Pegula, demonstrating superior sharpness, took control of the deciding set to advance into the semi-finals.

Miami Open Run Concludes But Ranking Set to Improve

This loss concludes the 2021 US Open champion’s U.S. tour, which included her most successful Miami Open campaign. Previously, Raducanu’s best result in Florida was reaching the second round. As a result of reaching the quarter-finals, the world No. 60 is projected to ascend in the WTA rankings.

Road to Quarter-Finals

On her path to the quarter-finals, Raducanu had defeated several American opponents in the preceding rounds. This included a walkover victory against McCartney Kessler while leading by a set and a decisive 6-1, 6-3 win over Amanda Anisimova.

Pegula to Face Eala in Semi-finals

Ultimately, the fourth-seeded Pegula’s superior form prevailed, securing her place in the semi-finals. There, she is scheduled to compete against Alexandra Eala, who caused a major upset by defeating Iga Swiatek in straight sets, setting up an intriguing semi-final encounter against the 31-year-old.
