Billy Zane on “Titanic” Legacy and New Western Film “Day of Reckoning”

Billy Zane, renowned for his role as Caledon Hockley in the cinematic phenomenon “Titanic,” has revealed he doesn’t frequently revisit the Oscar-winning blockbuster. The actor, aged 59, shared that while he may not actively watch the 1997 film, he is frequently reminded of its enduring impact by fans. Zane recently spoke exclusively with The Post at the premiere of his latest project, the Western action film “Day of Reckoning,” offering insights into his past work and current roles.

Fan Reminders of “Titanic’s” Enduring Popularity

“No, but I get sent photos,” Zane admitted regarding rewatching “Titanic.” “When it’s on TV, my phone blows up because everyone’s [sending messages]. I have more photos of flat screen TVs in non-descript rooms. It’s like, ‘Hey you’re on!'”

In James Cameron’s epic drama, “Titanic,” Zane portrayed the wealthy fiancé of Rose Dewitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). The narrative centers on the ill-fated romance between Rose and the penniless artist Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912.

Keeping in Touch with “Titanic” Cast Members

Despite not regularly viewing “Titanic,” Zane maintains connections with several members of the acclaimed cast. The film also featured notable performances from Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, and Victor Garber.

“Frances and Leo. Kate not as much because she lives in England, I see her occasionally. Kathy. Rochelle [Rose],” Zane shared, highlighting his continued relationships with his former co-stars.

Reflecting on “Titanic” 25th Anniversary

In 2022, Zane reflected on the lasting legacy of “Titanic” on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

“It’s a great honor, to be honest. It’s a wonderful film and it holds up,” he told Vulture, acknowledging the film’s sustained relevance and impact on audiences.

Recalling the film’s production, Zane stated, “During production, I had the feeling that we were making something significant.” “Titanic” garnered significant critical acclaim, ultimately receiving 11 Academy Awards.

“I think that was shared with some members of the cast and crew. Others, I think, were a little more stressed about the delivery, understandably so. I won’t say skeptical, but certainly preoccupied. We had the luxury to be able to marvel at the sheer undertaking,” Zane added, reflecting on the varying perspectives during the ambitious production.

Billy Zane’s New Role in “Day of Reckoning”

Transitioning from his iconic past roles, Zane is now starring in the new action-packed Western, “Day of Reckoning,” directed by Shaun Silva.

“It was thrilling to play. I’ve done quite a few [Westerns]. This one is really fun because it has all the tropes of a classic but really seeped in a modern tale,” Zane explained to The Post. He further elaborated on the film’s unique qualities: “Complete with hip-hop western music underneath and wicked gunplay. Really great characters. But the same dynamics, the same kind of archetypes with a slightly skewed moral compass.”

Intriguing Character Study in Modern Western Setting

“So things aren’t what they seem,” he continued, emphasizing the film’s layered narrative. “So as a character study, it’s fascinating.”

Zane expressed his enthusiasm for “Day of Reckoning,” stating, “We’re so excited about the film. It’s coming out in the summertime in theaters. It’s been a passion project of mine for like six years. We really wanted to tell the story.” Regarding his character, he added, “The only way to play him was as if he would, which is to not give a heck!”

“Day of Reckoning” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 28.
