Russell Wilson embraces status as Giants ‘underdog’ quarterback

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson embraces the underdog label as he officially joins the New York Giants. After signing a one-year contract, Wilson expressed his affinity for overcoming challenges, a mindset he believes aligns perfectly with the current state of the Giants franchise as they look to rebuild in the NFL.

Wilson Welcomes Underdog Status with Giants

“Sometimes I love the underdog mentality,” Wilson stated on Wednesday following his signing. “That’s kind of been my approach every day of my life. I don’t know, maybe being 5-[foot]-11, I don’t know what it is, and people telling you [that] you can’t do something, I love challenges. I love adversity. I love all that stuff.”

Challenges Await in New York

Wilson’s enthusiasm for a challenge appears well-placed as he enters a Giants organization seeking revitalization after a disappointing 3-14 season. The team is aiming to emerge from quarterback uncertainty, turning to the experienced, yet potentially declining, 36-year-old Wilson.

His one-year contract with the Giants includes a guaranteed $10.5 million, with possible incentives reaching up to $21 million.

Eclectic Quarterback Room

Wilson now headlines a diverse quarterback group, which features fellow newcomer Jameis Winston, signed for two years at $8 million, and returning player Tommy DeVito. The Giants are also expected to add a rookie quarterback in the upcoming draft.

Interestingly, Wilson considered the Giants last season but was informed Daniel Jones was the team’s starter. Now, with Jones’ departure, Wilson steps in as the anticipated leader.

“I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to perform every day,” Wilson declared. “To be able to lead, I think this team’s really seeking leadership in every facet.”

Giants’ Pursuit of a Quarterback

Wilson was reportedly not the Giants’ initial target. The team first pursued Matthew Stafford via trade with the Rams and then expressed interest in Aaron Rodgers, the veteran quarterback previously with the Jets and a future Hall of Fame inductee.

Ultimately, the Giants opted to move forward without Rodgers as he deliberated his decision.

“Aaron Rodgers is a tremendous football player. He’s accomplished extraordinary feats in this league,” Wilson acknowledged. “I’ve been fortunate to achieve significant successes, too. Currently, my focus is on the present and our potential here with the Giants.”

Proving Doubters Wrong

“Also, importantly, finding an organization that continues to have faith in you,” Wilson added.

The Steelers chose to move on from Wilson after just one season.

Wilson now faces the task of demonstrating that his recent performance decline is not a permanent trend. He aims to recapture the form that defined an earlier, more dominant phase of his career.

His past accolades now seem distant as he joins his fourth team in five years. Since 2021, his record as a starting quarterback stands at 23-32.

Wilson skillfully avoided directly addressing questions about his perceived decline, a move reminiscent of his past agility in avoiding tackles on the field.

Focused on Winning

“You never feel truly satisfied unless you achieve ultimate victory,” he explained. “That’s always been my mindset. I’ve experienced remarkable seasons and various accomplishments, but as a competitor, a warrior, you always aspire to win it all.”

Draft Implications and Mentorship

Speculation suggests the Giants might select a quarterback with their No. 3 draft pick, with Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward being potential candidates.

However, Wilson’s comments suggest mentorship is not his primary focus.

“If we draft a quarterback, we will ensure he is fully prepared and adopts the necessary mindset,” Wilson commented. “But for me, it’s about the pursuit of victory. My focus is on winning and contributing as the quarterback of the New York Giants to achieve that goal.”

Familiar Faces and New Targets

Wilson emphasized his preparation, mentioning numerous Giants players by name.

He noted his prior time in Denver with Giants tight ends Chris Manhertz and Greg Dulcich.

He praised Malik Nabers, his anticipated leading receiver, as a “freak of an athlete.” Wilson also lauded Head Coach Brian Daboll as “one of the most competitive individuals,” highlighting Daboll’s Super Bowl victories with the Patriots and a national championship at Alabama.

“He’s been around excellence, he understands its essence,” Wilson observed. “This is a Coach of the Year recipient not long ago.”

MetLife Stadium Memories

Wilson previously won Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium with the Seahawks. His recent visits to the stadium have evoked strong emotions.

“It evokes a certain feeling,” Wilson said. “It ignites excitement about the potential of this team.”
