Eala Elated by Toni Nadal’s Surprise Miami Open Appearance After Upset Victory Over Swiatek
Rising tennis star Alexandra Eala expressed her delight after Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal, unexpectedly appeared at her Miami Open quarter-final match. The 19-year-old wildcard, a product of the Rafa Nadal Academy, enjoyed a significant victory against top-seeded Iga Swiatek on Wednesday, with Nadal’s esteemed uncle present in her player’s box.
Unexpected Support from a Coaching Legend
The world No. 140 caused a major shock by defeating the second-ranked Swiatek 6-2, 7-5, securing her place in a first-ever WTA 1000 semi-final. Following the impressive win, Eala conveyed her excitement at seeing Toni Nadal courtside, acknowledging his valuable support during her formative years at the academy.
Breakout Performance at Miami Open
Eala has emerged as a prominent figure at this year’s Miami Open. Prior to the tournament, the young player had only secured two WTA Tour main draw victories. However, she has now advanced to the semi-finals after triumphing over three Grand Slam champions consecutively – Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and most recently, Swiatek.
Dominant Display and Familiar Face
Eala delivered an exceptional performance against Swiatek, particularly in the first set where she struck 10 winners. Adding to the occasion was the presence of Toni Nadal in her box. Having coached his nephew Rafael Nadal for many years before departing in 2017, Toni Nadal’s coaching pedigree is well-established, also including time working with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Academy Ties and Family Support
Currently based at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Mallorca – where Eala previously trained – Toni Nadal demonstrated his continued support for the academy’s alumni. He was not alone in making the journey to support Eala; her parents and additional coaches from the academy were also present to witness what she described as the biggest triumph of her burgeoning career.
Family Motivation and Nadal’s Encouragement
“Many members of my family flew in to watch,” Eala stated post-match. “My parents arrived last night, and my uncle and cousin from Seattle also came.” She added, “It provided extra drive for today’s match. I really wanted them to see me win, although I knew they would be happy just seeing me compete at this level.”
Surprise Visit From Toni Nadal
Toni Nadal’s attendance was indeed a surprise, with Eala admitting she was unaware of his plan to attend until the morning of the match. Rafael Nadal also expressed his support for the 19-year-old after her stunning quarter-final upset, tweeting his pride and encouragement for her continued dreams and success at the Miami Open.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
Eala now aims to extend her remarkable run in the Miami Open as she prepares for her semi-final match. She is set to face either Emma Raducanu or Jessica Pegula for a place in the final.
