Miami Open match suspended as players left waiting on court following request

The Miami Open match between Gael Monfils and Sebastian Korda in the round of 16 faced an interruption as play was suspended due to diminishing light. The request to illuminate the stadium lights came from Monfils during the final set, with the score tied at 1-1. Overcast skies descended upon the court, situated within the Hard Rock Stadium, significantly reducing visibility at the tennis event.

Constructed within the Hard Rock Stadium complex, the tennis arena experienced rapidly deteriorating natural light conditions. Officials informed the umpire that activating the lighting system would not be immediate, leading to the initial suspension of the encounter. Monfils and Korda awaited the resumption on the court. After play recommenced, only a brief period of games was possible before rainfall forced a second halt and the players left the court.

Miami Open Match Disrupted by Diminishing Light and Rain

In a rematch following their Indian Wells encounter less than three weeks prior, Gael Monfils and Sebastian Korda engaged in a compelling contest at the Miami Open, vying for a quarter-final berth. After conceding the opening set, Monfils mounted a strong comeback, pushing the match to a decisive set just as the weather conditions deteriorated.

Darkness Descends on Stadium Court

Tuesday’s forecast in Miami predicted challenging weather conditions, including rain. However, it was cloud cover that initially impacted the day’s opening match on the main Stadium court. Reduced sunlight made visibility so poor that Monfils, ranked world No. 46, found it difficult to see the ball. With the score at 1-1 in the third set, he requested intervention from the umpire to activate the stadium lights.

Umpire Initiates Lighting Request, Suspension Announced

Korda reportedly concurred with Monfils’ assessment of the visibility. Chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani then communicated via radio to initiate the process of turning on the stadium lights. However, activation proved not to be immediate. Consequently, the umpire declared the match temporarily suspended pending illumination of the court.

Commentary on the Delay

Commentator Colin Fleming of Sky Sports remarked on the situation, stating, “It is clearly not a simple on/off switch. It is evident Gael Monfils desires to wait for the lights.”

Jonathan Overend, also providing commentary, added, “The conditions are indeed very dark, and it is logical to adjust the match environment at a balanced scoreline of 1-1 in sets and 1-1 in games within the final set.”

Overend further commented on the venue’s complexity, “The enormity of this stadium, likely incorporating both permanent and temporary lighting systems, undoubtedly complicates matters. Given the weather forecast, one might expect tournament officials to have anticipated such lighting needs.”

Extended Delay Frustrates Players and Commentators

Initially, players received an estimate of two minutes for the lights to activate. However, this timeframe elapsed without any change, prolonging the wait for Monfils and Korda. Fleming expressed dissatisfaction with the delay, suggesting continued play should have been enforced.

Fleming elaborated, “This delay is undoubtedly frustrating for everyone involved. I am somewhat surprised by the leniency shown, almost allowing Gael Monfils to dictate the proceedings.”

He further observed, “It’s visible that Korda is prepared to continue playing, positioned at the baseline. I am somewhat surprised that umpire Lahyani is not insisting on continuing play while awaiting the lights. The extended duration for light activation is indeed surprising.”

Players Confer at Net as Lights Remain Off

After nine minutes, the floodlights remained inactive. Korda, who had been waiting courtside, then approached the net to confer with Monfils and the umpire about the ongoing situation.

Supervisor Intervention and Light Activation

A tournament supervisor joined the discussion, confirming an additional five-minute delay before play could resume. Korda received permission to briefly leave the court. However, shortly after, the Stadium court lights unexpectedly turned on, and he was promptly summoned back to continue the match.

“Farcical Situation” – Commentary on Light Activation

Fleming maintained his critical perspective, describing the situation as “farcical.” He commented, “They could not activate the floodlights, and then allowing a player to leave only results in further delay once the lights finally come on. Far from ideal.”

Match Resumes, Further Delays Ensue

Play finally recommenced approximately 13 minutes after the initial suspension, with Monfils holding serve comfortably. Korda then achieved the first break of serve in the deciding set, taking a 4-3 lead, before requesting medical attention and initiating a time out.

Rain Forces Second Suspension

The series of interruptions persisted as light drizzle commenced following the medical time out. Both athletes returned to their benches, awaiting the cessation of rain before resuming. After playing a single point, the court surface became evidently too slippery, leading to a second suspension of the tennis match.

Point Replay Agreed, Further Match Suspensions

Scheduled Resumption

Players and the umpire agreed that the single point played prior to the rain delay would be replayed upon resumption of play. Korda and Monfils departed the Stadium court together. Concurrently, another match on the Grandstand court was also halted. Play is currently scheduled to resume no earlier than 8 pm UK time.
