German AI boss: 'Drone wall' on NATO eastern flank possible in a year

German Firm Urges NATO to Deploy Drone Deterrent on Eastern Flank

MUNICH – Helsing, a German defense contractor, is advocating for the rapid deployment of a robust conventional deterrent along NATO’s eastern border, emphasizing the use of advanced combat drones.

Call for “Drone Wall” and Modernized Defense Strategy

Gundbert Scherf, co-founder and co-CEO of the Munich-based company, stated in an interview that a “drone wall” could be established within a year. He emphasized the necessity of incorporating reconnaissance capabilities, including satellites and surveillance drones, into this defense strategy.

Scherf contends that a significant shift in modern defense thinking is required.

He criticized the current approach, stating, “The ongoing discussion still echoes Cold War paradigms. We are still focused on counting opposing armored vehicles, aircraft, and naval vessels, attempting to achieve parity through substantial financial investment. I believe this approach is misguided.”

Helsing’s AI-Driven Defense Innovations

Helsing specializes in applying artificial intelligence (AI) within the defense sector.
