Border Tragedy: Three Migrants Perish Near San Diego Amidst Storm
Three individuals tragically lost their lives last week while attempting to cross the US-Mexico border near San Diego, California. The US Border Patrol reported that the deaths occurred during a severe storm that brought sub-freezing temperatures to the rugged mountain terrain.
Distress Calls Lead to Discovery of Deceased Individuals
According to an official statement, Border Patrol agents responded to two separate distress calls on March 14, within an hour of each other. In the Otay Mountain wilderness area, agents discovered two men and one woman deceased. The agency stated that the following evening, authorities responded to another call from an individual stranded in the mountains suffering from a broken ankle.
Decrease in Illegal Crossings Amidst Policy Changes
Recent data indicates a decline in illegal border crossings at the southern US border last month. Figures reached their lowest point since 2000, coinciding with pledges from the Trump administration to significantly alter immigration policy through widespread deportations. Concurrently, enforcement actions within the US have escalated, with officials making more immigration arrests in February than in any month in the preceding seven years.
Immigration Policies and Increased Risks
Research suggests a correlation between recent US immigration policies and increasingly perilous conditions for migrants. A 2022 study indicated that the construction of a substantial border wall, a key policy initiative, has contributed to a rise in immigrant fatalities and severe injuries resulting from falls.
Otay Mountain Wilderness: A Hazardous Region
The US Border Patrol described the Otay Mountain wilderness, the location of last week’s fatalities, as presenting “harsh” terrain and “extreme” conditions. The agency statement emphasized that individuals attempting to cross the border in this area frequently encounter grave risks, including:
- Dehydration
- Starvation
- Heat Stroke
- Hypothermia
Details of the Fatal Incidents
On the evening of March 14, amidst rain and cold weather from the storm, agents responded to a call for assistance near a trail. They encountered two women, one of whom was deceased. That same night, agents were dispatched to another call from a group reporting hypothermia symptoms and breathing difficulties. They located a 16-year-old girl, along with two deceased men who had been traveling with her, including her father.
Border Patrol Warning Against Illegal Crossings
Jeffrey D Stalnaker, acting chief patrol agent of the San Diego sector for US Border Patrol, issued a warning in the agency’s statement against unlawful US border crossings.
Stalnaker stated, “The Otay Mountain wilderness is unpredictable and unforgiving. Extreme conditions and harsh terrain can lead to injuries and death to you or your loved ones. Avoid breaking the law and the inherent risks.”
