Robson Weighs In on Rashford’s Aston Villa Spell and Manchester United Future
Manchester United icon Bryan Robson acknowledges Marcus Rashford’s positive impact at Aston Villa, suggesting it validates the club’s decision to offer him a significant contract extension prior to his January departure. However, Robson has also publicly criticized Rashford’s exit, asserting that the transfer should not have occurred.
Rashford’s Revival at Villa Park
Seeking to rejuvenate his form after a dip following a stellar 2022/23 season, Rashford, 27, joined Aston Villa before the winter transfer deadline. At Villa Park, he has rediscovered his enthusiasm, playing for a club competing at a higher level than Manchester United and preparing for a Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. While Robson recognizes Rashford’s talent under Unai Emery’s management, he disputes claims that Rashford’s enjoyment of football has only just returned since joining a new team.
Robson’s Critique of Punditry and Rashford’s Mindset
Speaking to Express Sport, Robson stated, “Pundits on TV are driving me crazy.” He elaborated, addressing former players who suggest Rashford is only now “enjoying his football again” since moving to Villa.
Robson countered this notion: “Being a football player is a privileged position. If you are at Manchester United, you should be enjoying your football and working diligently to contribute to the team’s success.”
He continued, “Joining Villa is no different from playing for Manchester United. The aim is to relish the game and perform to your best ability. There are no excuses.”

Aston Villa’s Option to Buy and Rashford’s Future
Aston Villa possesses an option to permanently sign Rashford for £40 million in the upcoming summer transfer window, a clause they are widely expected to activate.
Should Villa choose not to pursue the deal, it is anticipated that the England international would seek a permanent move elsewhere rather than remain at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim’s management.
Robson Advocates for Rashford’s Manchester United Redemption
Despite the likelihood of a permanent Villa move, Robson expressed his desire to see Rashford rediscover his peak form and experience a resurgence at Old Trafford next season.
“Marcus possesses exceptional talent,” Robson added, “and should be performing at a higher standard for Manchester United. He ideally should not have moved to Aston Villa. His focus should be on contributing his best for Manchester United.”
Decision Lies with Manager and Player
“[Rashford’s return] is ultimately a decision for the manager and Marcus himself,” Robson concluded. “However, in my opinion, he has the ability, and the club must strive to maximize his potential.”
“Furthermore, Marcus needs to maximize his own potential. He should be a Manchester United player next season.”
