EastEnders’ Nick Berry, 60, quit acting to become stay-at-home dad after iconic soap roles

Former soap star Nick Berry, 60, left fame and the small screen behind to become a stay-at-home father to his children.

The dad-of-two is best known for playing Simon Wicks in EastEnders, as well as Nick Rowan in ITV’s Heartbeat.

After leaving the BBC soap in 1990, the actor made a grand one-off-return to the former in 2012.

In a special episode, his character attended the funeral of his on-screen mother, Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement). It was his 466th appearance as Simon.

In an interview with Mail Online in 2011, the TV star said that he “chose to be a stay-at-home dad” to his two children, Louis, now 27 and Finley, 24.

“I always said that when the boys were teenagers I could go back, but the longer you don’t do something the harder it is to do it, and I haven’t really missed it,” he said.

When it comes to acting, Nick said “never say never” and stated that being a soap star was “great”.

“You’re driven everywhere, fed every five minutes and told what to do and where to go. What I struggled with was that the boys were very young and I felt like I was away filming all the time.

“I’d been blessed with these little people and yet I wasn’t really there. I realised I wanted to be at home,” he added.

The 60-year-old spent five years performing on Albert Square followed by a further six as Sergeant Nick in Heartbeat.

Following his departure from the ITV show, he took on the role of former Royal Navy officer, Mike Nicholls, in the short-lived TV series, Harbour Lights.

Following his departure from the drama in 2000, Nick went on to star in 22 episodes of In Deep.

He played Detective Liam Ketman beside Stephen Tompkinson, 57, who portrayed Garth O’Hanlon.

Once considered to be a heartthrob, Nick was spotted by the paparazzi earlier this week as he stepped out to grab a coffee from his local bakery in Essex.

In recently revealed photographs, he was seen wearing a black slogan T-shirt, a pair of dark jeans and lace-up trainers.

He looked unrecognisable as he had let his brown hair go grey and was wearing a pair of black sunglasses.
