'Unwavering support!' Joe Biden plans visit to Israel after call with Naftali Bennett

Joe Biden, 79, had a conversation with his Israeli counterpart Naftali Bennett, 49, on Sunday. During their call, Biden and Bennett discussed last week’s counter-terrorism raid in Syria which led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quarashi, 45.

A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed: “Prime Minister Bennett congratulated President Biden on the operation to eliminate ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi and said that the world is now a safer place thanks to the courageous operation of the US forces.”

However, Biden also agreed to visit Bennett in Israel “later this year”.

The White House’s statement said: “President Joseph R Biden Jr spoke today with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of Israel to reaffirm the warm and historic partnership between the United States and Israel.

“The leaders discussed the shared security and other challenges in the Middle East region, including the threat posed by Iran and its proxies.

“The President underscored his commitment to expanding stability and partnerships across the Middle East region, as exemplified by the Abraham Accords, together with Israelis and Palestinians enjoying equal measures of security, freedom, and prosperity.

“They discussed the recent US operation against the ISIS leader in northwestern Syria and the ongoing US commitment to protect the American people and support the defence of its partners across the Middle East region.

“President Biden conveyed his unwavering support for Israel’s security and freedom of action, emphasising his administration’s full support for replenishing Israel’s Iron Dome system.

“The two leaders also discussed global challenges outside of the Middle East region, including the potential of further Russian aggression against Ukraine.

“Prime Minister Bennett invited President Biden and his wife to visit Israel and the two leaders agreed to be in regular contact.”

Biden and Bennett first met back in August at the White House.

Mr Bennett became Prime Minister of Israel in June 2021, just months after Biden was inaugurated as the 46th US President.

But Bennett succeeded Benjamin Netanyahu, 72, who had served as Prime Minister for a total of 15 years, after he joined a loose coalition of parliamentarians to oust the nation’s leader.
