Being Dolly Parton is a 24/7 job — even in the event of an emergency.
The 75-year-old country music beauty talked to WSJ. Magazine this week for its “My Monday Morning” column, revealing, among other fun facts, that she wears a full face of makeup to bed, only to wash it off in the morning and immediately start all over again.
The reason for the exhaustive routine? There could be an earthquake — even in Tennessee.
“I do all my beauty work and cleaning my face in the morning because I usually try to keep my makeup on at night. Because I never know if there’s going to be an earthquake or a tornado or a storm and I’m going to have to go out in the middle of the night,” she said when asked about her beauty regimen, which includes predominately Maybelline and Max Factor products.
Even after a long day, she added, “I don’t like to go home and just tear down completely because my poor husband has to look at me.”
The “9 to 5” singer also claimed that, even during the pandemic, her routine never slipped.
“I don’t wear sweatpants,” she scoffed when asked if she had “embraced” lazy lockdown fashions. “But I do like to be comfortable like everybody else,” she said, describing her typical “house clothes” as “a little dress-like teddy,” with a matching robe if she gets chilly.
“I call them my baby clothes because they’re soft like a baby. But I don’t wear sweat clothes.”
Parton also discussed her vast wig collection — “I never have a bad hair day,” she said — and professed her die-hard blond ambition: “I just am a blond. That’s just my nature. It’s me.”
Despite what some may deem an over-the-top routine, Parton insisted that she’s doing exactly what makes her feel good.
“It’s about being comfortable in your own skin. My own overexaggerated look came from a serious place I’ve often spoken about: the town tramp in our little country hometown,” she said, recalling a boldly dressed woman from her childhood whom she fondly remembers, despite a certain reputation.
“When everybody would say, ‘Oh, she’s just trash,’ I’d say, ‘Well, trash is what I’m going to grow up to be.’ And I guess my look is glamorous trash!”
Besides recently launching a new fragrance, “Scent From Above,” not to mention her part in saving millions of lives by investing in Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine research, the icon said she’s been working on songs to uplift listeners.
“By making other people try to feel good and lift them up, it’s lifted me up,” Parton said.
