Alleged Capitol rioter filmed flashing ‘King James’ tattoo on January 6 is arrested after inking matched 2012 arrest booking photo

  • James Burton McGrew was identified by his stomach tattoo of ‘King James’ when he lifted up his shirt during the January 6 Capitol riot
  •  He had the same tattoo in a booking photo after a 2012 arrest, but FBI didn’t say what he was arrested for in 2012 or where
  • McGrew is accused of attacking multiple cops during the riot
  • He was arrested in Arizona on Sunday

A suspected Capitol rioter was nailed after flashing a distinctive ‘King James’ stomach tattoo investigators were able to match to a previous arrest booking photo.

James Burton McGrew was identified thanks to the distinctive inking before being arrested at his home in Arizona on Sunday, although court documents don’t offer further detail about the 2012 arrest which saw the tattoo snapped by cops.

Law enforcement bodycam footage caught the ink when McGrew lifted his white t-shirt to wipe his eyes, according to the FBI arrest affidavit.

Inside the Capitol Rotunda, McGrew was allegedly seen on multiple videos ‘striking a law enforcement officer’ after they pushed him and other rioters back, according to the affidavit.

McGrew retreated but ‘within seconds’ ignored cops’ orders and lunged at an officer, according the the arrest affidavit.

‘At one point, as McGrew continued to scream at law enforcement officers, a law enforcement officer calmly told McGrew, “Just leave, just leave, man, come on.” McGrew screamed back, “You leave. You leave. This is our house,”‘ the affidavit says.

‘Law enforcement officers attempted to again move the rioters towards the door, using their baton to push the rioters back and repeatedly stating, “Move back.” As the law enforcement officers moved McGrew back, McGrew stuck another law enforcement officer.’

Then he allegedly tried to grab the officer’s baton.

McGrew is charged with entering restricted grounds without lawful authority, impeding government business, engaging in violence on restricted grounds and obstructing law enforcement.

To date, more than 425 people accused of storming the Capitol have been arrested, according to the FBI. About 90 are charged with violent crimes.
