'I'll call Messi, tell me when!': Pep Guardiola challenges Bayern Munich to battle of the sextuples

‘I’ll call Messi, tell me when and where!’: Pep Guardiola challenges Hansi Flick and Bayern Munich to a ‘battle of the sextuples’ after the Bundesliga giants matched Barcelona’s 2009 record

Pep Guardiola has challenged Hansi Flick and Bayern Munich to a ‘battle of the sextuples’ after the German champions matched his record of six straight trophies during his time at Barcelona.

Bayern beat Mexico’s Tigres UANL 1-0 on Thursday – thanks to Benjamin Pavard’s decisive goal – to win the Club World Cup title and earn their sixth trophy in less than nine months.

Having won the league, both domestic cups, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup, Bayern became only the second team to win the sextuple after Guardiola set the record with Barcelona in 2009.

As a result, the Manchester City boss – who spent three years as Bayern manager before moving to the Premier League – shared a video on Twitter to congratulate his former team.

He also took the opportunity to challenge Flick and is side to a ‘seventh title’ showdown.

He said: ‘Big congratulations to all the Bayern family for this incredible success, to be the Club World Cup champions and especially to win six titles.

‘We are so proud, I am so proud, a big congratulations for everyone, especially Hansi [Flick], the players and the backroom staff for this amazing thing.

‘But I would like to say to Hansi that you are the second team to win the six titles in a row!

‘Before you, there was another team, Barcelona… so maybe I can call Messi and company and we can play for the seventh title? Tell me when and where and we will be there!’

Bayern came close to completing the sextuple under Guardiola in 2013 – having won the Bundesliga title in each season he was in charge.

Speaking after victory in Qatar, a jubilant Flick said: ‘Congratulations to my team. They have completed a historical feat, they have won six titles in one season.

‘Even for the successful club that is FC Bayern Munich, this was the most successful season ever.

‘The team played outstandingly. The win was never in danger, we dominated and deservedly won the final.

‘We were all at the limit, the same goes for me at the touchline. The match against Tigres was on eye-level, even though we dominated. They deserved to be in this final.’
