‘Cyberpunk 2077’ developer CD Projekt hit with cyberattack

A hacker attacked the beleaguered video-game developer behind “Cyberpunk 2077” and threatened to leak the source codes for three of its titles, the company said Tuesday.

The apparent ransomware attack was the latest headache for CD Projekt, the Polish firm whose highly anticipated “Cyberpunk” game became a glitch-ridden mess after its December release.

The company said it discovered on Monday that an “unidentified actor” had broken into its internal network, collected a trove of data and left a ransom note, which CD Projekt posted on Twitter.

The firm said it did not believe that any of its players’ or users’ personal data had been compromised in the attack.

But the hacker said in the note that they had obtained the full source codes for “Cyberpunk 2077” and two other games, “Witcher 3” and “Gwent,” as well as internal accounting, legal, investor-relations and other documents.

“If we will not come to an agreement, then your source codes will be sold or leaked online and your documents will be sent to our contacts in gaming journalism,” the alleged note read. “Your public image will go down the s—-er even more and people will see how you [sic] s—-y your company functions.”

The hacker also encrypted some devices in CD Projekt’s network but it had backups that remained intact, according to the company.

CD Projekt said it would not negotiate with the hackers despite the possibility that the compromised data could be released. The firm added that it’s been in touch with law-enforcement authorities and IT forensic specialists about the attack.

“We are taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release, in particular by approaching any parties that may be affected due to the breach,” the company said in a statement.

CD Projekt’s Warsaw-listed stock dropped 4.3 percent to 274 Polish zloty ($74.09) as of 6:19 a.m.

The attack came as CD Projekt tried to clean up “Cyberpunk 2077” after widespread glitches made the game difficult to play on older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles after its December launch.

CD Projekt has released patches and fixes to address the problems, which forced the company to offer refunds and led Sony to pull the game from its PlayStation store.
