Monty Don speaks out on heartbreaking timing of dog Nigel’s death: ‘Miss him like mad’

Fans of Gardeners’s World will know how much Nigel meant to Monty Don and how his death affected him. Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch, the presenter explained how Nigel died as he “wrote the last word” of his book My Garden World: The Natural Year.

“Nigel your dog was very much part of the experience of writing that book,” Steph began.

“There’s kind of a sad story to this isn’t there? I will let you tell this Monty.”

Monty replied: “Nigel was with me all the time.

“He was at my feet when I’d sit here in my workroom writing most of the time, with Nigel lying on the floor.

“He is buried in the garden and flowers grow on his grave and there are birds singing in the trees above him.

“He is part of all that world.”

Monty confirmed his beloved golden retriever Nigel died in May this year after being “suddenly taken ill”.

Announcing the news on his Instagram page, Monty wrote: “To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.
