Chelsea star Timo Werner snubbed Man City transfer after Pep Guardiola phone call

Timo Werner reportedly snubbed the chance to join Manchester City after Pep Guardiola called the striker in a bid to persuade him to move to the Etihad Stadium. The Germany international was not short of options before completing his move to Stamford Bridge.

He looked destined to join Liverpool before the COVID-19 pandemic derailed Jurgen Klopp’s pursuit of the striker.

The Liverpool boss was forced to pull out of the running for his signature due to the financial implications of the crisis.

Manchester United are also said to have expressed an interest in Werner.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly met the star in Berlin in an attempt to get him on board.

Both have played a huge part throughout Guardiola’s after winning two Premier League titles under the Spaniard.

Guardiola needs to find a long-term successor to Aguero with Gabriel Jesus unlikely to ever be the standout first choice.

However, Werner was certain he wanted to join Chelsea after speaking to Lampard.

He has since claimed the Chelsea boss was the primary reason he chose to join the Blues.

“He [Lampard] was the main point,” Werner said.

“We talked a lot about things like the system, how he wants to play and sees me playing, and how the system fits me.

“He is a really nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player because he wants to help me as a guy.

“He knows me now a little bit better and it fits very well between us and now I am happy to be here.”
