Rumours have tipped the star of Queen of the South, Alice Braga, to play major DC Comics supervillain Poison Ivy in the upcoming comic book blockbuster The Suicide Squad. The exact casting has not been officially confirmed, but leaks have suggested the USA Network star will be introduced as a new antagonist for the team of anti-heroes in Marvel director James Gunn’s sequel.
James Gunn’s sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is set for release in 2021 and will simply be called The Suicide Squad.
The highly anticipated DC sequel will feature Margot Robbie reprising her role as the Joker’s ex-girlfriend Harley Quinn alongside a team of new and returning faces.
Now rumours have suggested another major player for the DC Universe will be introduced, played by Brazilian actress Alice Braga.
An announcement on the director’s official Twitter profile in September 2019 confirmed the Queen of the South star had joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

Recent leaks have seemingly confirmed Braga will be portraying Poison Ivy, a frequent adversary of Batman and an ally of Harley Quinn.
The meta-human character was most recently voiced by Lake Bell alongside The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco for the adult animated series Harley Quinn, as the titular anti-hero’s best friend and love interest.
Shortly after the leaks were posted on online forums 4chan and Reddit, director James Gunn denied the rumours on Twitter.
He said: “Wouldn’t it be nice if sites didn’t report the ramblings of some rando on Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, or 4chan as if it was news?”
However, the leaks also featured an extensive plot synopsis alongside casting rumours for The Suicide Squad, so there may be a possibility Braga will indeed be playing Poison Ivy.
The rumoured synopsis sees Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) forming a new team to take down Vandal Savage after the original Suicide Squad were wiped out by a Nazi experiment, Mongal.
They went on: “Five months later, Rick Flag manages to send a message to Waller that he is still alive and Savage needs to be stopped.
“Waller assembles a new team to investigate and approaches Flag’s old army buddy Adrian Chase (Idris Elba) to lead the team in exchange for exoneration for his crimes and a chance to reconnect with his estranged daughter Drew (Storm Reid).”

Elba was originally reported to have been cast as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot, replacing Will Smith’s role from the first film.
Warner Bros. and James Gunn instead opted to introduce the British star as a new character, leaving the door open for Smith to reprise his role in future instalments.
Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) are also confirmed to be making their return, alongside new comers David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher) and Steve Agee (King Shark).
Braga is also confirmed to be joined by Pete Davidson, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker, John Cena and Taika Waititi, amongst others, but these roles have yet to be disclosed by Gunn or Warner Bros.
Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie has also expressed interest in introducing Poison Ivy to the big screen, potentially in a sequel to 2020’s Birds of Prey.
Although many major productions have been delayed amid the coronavirus pandemic, filming for The Suicide Squad wrapped up in February 2020.
Gunn has revealed he is editing the film at home and COVID-19 has not affected its projected release date of August 6 2021.
The director denied rumours of Alice Braga’s casting and Express Online have reached out to Warner Bros. representatives for comment.
