TalkTalk broadband down: Thousands unable to connect as major outage hits parts of UK

It was not a good afternoon if you are relying on TalkTalk for your internet access. The popular broadband supplier has major issues with some customers in the North of England left unable to access the web or any online services.

The issues began at around 12.30pm with thousands of reports flooding in from areas including Newcastle, Durham and Northumberland.

TalkTalk now says it has it fixed the problem and customers should be able to get back online. In a statement sent to Express.co.uk a TalkTalk spokesperson said: “Some customers in and around the North East of England experienced a loss of service for a short period of time earlier today due to a fire at a BT exchange in Newcastle, impacting a number of providers. The fire has now been contained, and service has been restored for our broadband customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Down Detector, which monitors outages across the globe, first alerted users that there was an issue many using the sites forum to vent their anger.

Speaking on Down Detector one TalkTalk users said: “No Internet again. I’m seriously considering switching to another supplier.

While another added: “Stanley county Durham talk talk is down. Update soon as possible please.”

With the outage lasting over an hour some customers were clearly unhappy.

Venting their frustration on Twitter, one user said: “Looks like someone at @TalkTalk has switched off the entire internet for the North East. Northumberland, Gateshead, Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham all down. Whoops. Can you please turn it back on?”

Another added: “Hi @TalkTalk internet is down in NE6 Newcastle and we are working from home, are you having issues in the T&W area?”

Broadband outages are particularly irritating at this time when so many people are trying to work from home.

This online service is critical for those needing to stay in touch with the office or take video calls and check emails.
