If Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain implant succeeds, the word ‘headphones’ may have a whole new meaning.
In a Twitter exchange with computer scientist, Austin Howard, Musk, who funds a project called Neuralink that is developing a brain-implanted computer, said that the company’s device will eventually be able to stream music directly into one’s brain.

‘If we implement neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature,’ Howard posted in a tweet on Sunday to which Musk replied simply, ‘Yes.’
In May, the tech tycoon spoke on Joe Rogan’s podcast to discuss the birth of his child, along with how Neuralink is set to have a version of its brain implant ready ‘within a year’
The claim follows up similarly vague but lofty claims made by Musk in recent months, including a suggestion that Neuralink would be able to cure depression and addiction
In a separate Twitter exchange earlier this month, one Twitter user, Pranay Pathole, asked Musk, ‘Can Neuralink be used to re-train the part of the brain which is responsible for causing addiction or depression?’
‘For sure. This is both great & terrifying,’ Musk wrote in the response.
At this point, it’s hard to rule out what Neuralink can or cannot do since the machine, a one-inch implant that is surgically inserted into a person’s brain by removing a piece of their skull, has only been discussed publicly once.
A little more than a month from now, Neuralink will hold its second major public event as a company.

What exactly the event will hold, is just as mysterious as ever. That hasn’t stopped Musk from trying to gin up excitement about company’s progress on Twitter, however.
‘Wait until you see the next version vs what was presented last year,” Musk tweeted in March 2020. ‘It’s awesome.’
So far, Neuralink has described its own chip, called the N1 which is surgically implanted into the brain using a robot through a two-inch incision. The operation allegedly takes less than an hour.
