If Spurs are able to beat Carlo Ancelotti to the Dane’s signature, then Winks is the most likely to leave North London, according to the Mirror.

Winks is also valued between £25m and £30million and has failed to become a regular starter under Mourinho at Tottenham.

The 24-year-old could become the victim of some re-shuffling as Mourinho tries to form his new look midfield on a limited budget.

Due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is hoping to balance the books during the summer in order to allow the manager to sign who he wants.

It is also believed that Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Pieters, who is currently on loan at St Mary’s, could be used as part of a deal to lure Hojbjerg to London.

However, Southampton are yet to declare any interest in making the young defender’s loan move a permanent one after the season has finished.

Winks was an academy success story with Tottenham and was nurtured under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, he is not quite as favoured under the new boss – with stiff competition from the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso in midfield.

Hojbjerg was recently stripped of the Southampton captaincy after he confirmed to the club that he would not be signing an extension this summer, giving his current deal just 12 more months.

Therefore, the Saints would prefer to cash in on him this summer rather than allow him to leave as a free agent the following year.
