Ivanka Trump shock: How friend claimed Ivanka ‘does not believe in her father’s populism’

Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner backed Mr Trump in the 2016 presidential election and are now a key part of his administration. Dubbed the First Daughter, Ivanka is a special adviser to the US President for womens’ issues and Jared is a special adviser for strategic planning. However, according to 2019 book ‘Kushner Inc’ her friends have insisted they did this for the networking opportunities, not because they actually believe in Mr Trump’s populist rhetoric.

Ivanka and Jared’s social circle is mostly the New York Jewish community, who were “aghast” at Mr Trump’s divisive campaign.

They were particularly shocked by his continued insisitance that a wall must be built on the US-Mexico border, and the so-called ‘Muslim ban’.

One guest at Mr Kushner’s 35th birthday party told author Vicky Ward: “We’re Jews…

“It’s just as easy to say the Muslims can’t come to the US because they’re going to blow you up and the Mexicans are gonna rape you [as it is to say] the Jews are gonna steal all your money.

“And so, we’re not on the side of this craziness, because we’re always the ones being blamed for everything.”

Many in their social circle also remember Mr Trump’s “reluctance” to accept Ivanka’s conversion to Judaism.

Whether they were trying to convince themselves that their friends were not like this, or whether it is true that Ivanka does not support this is unclear.

Nevertheless, Ms Ward wrote: “No one thought Kushner or Ivanka believed in Trump’s populist platform.”

One claimed her voice went “cold and menacing” during some particularly tough negotiations.

Jared, too, has been described as “just as sinister as Donald Trump” by a former business associate.

He apparently lost his temper on a number of occasions, showed a sense of entitlement and seemed to have “zero awareness that he was born on third base” – an American term meaning someone who is born with a silver spoon in their mouth, but has the arrogance to think their standing is entirely their own doing.

However, Ivanka has said herself that she does disagree with her father in private, but prefers not to speak out against him publicly.

She told ABC in 2018: “He’s my father and he’s my boss and one of the reasons that I have such a good relationship with him is that I am incredibly candid with him.”

Asked whether that means she sometimes disagrees with him, she said: “Oh, frequently. And he knows it. He knows exactly where I stand on any issue.”

One of the issues that Ivanka is alleged to have lobbied her father on was the treatment of migrants at the US-Mexico border, including the separation of families and children being kept in cages.

She also also gently expressed that she has a different view to her father on a number of issues, including that she does not agree that the press are the “enemy of the people”.
