Fans say Aldi has ‘won Christmas’ over John Lewis as they have funny Twitter exchange

Christmas isn’t Christmas until the John Lewis Christmas advert is released across British television screens, but as the annual battle for the best holiday advert commences many are saying that budget retailer, Aldi, has already “won Christmas”.

Each year, big food retailers take part in a friendly completion to see who would come out on top with the best Christmas advert of the year.

Despite the battle to be Christmas number one, there’s still room for some friendly fun and viewers are loving the latest exchange between Aldi and John Lewis.

With Aldi’s publicised reaction on Twitter to John Lewis’s 2019 festive campaign, many have branded the bargain retailer as the winner thanks to its funny response.

Unfortunately for Tesco and Spice Girl Mel B, it came at their expense.

Following the release of the John Lewis Excitable Edgar advert last week, Aldi was quick to spot the lovable little dragon was caught holding a carrot, before planting it on a snowman which he then accidentally, but brutally, melts.

The star of Aldi’s own festive offering is, of course, Kevin the Carrot, and they were not happy.

Sharing an image to their official Twitter page of Excitable Edgar, the star of John Lewis’ advert, that shows an adorable dragon holding a carrot, Aldi tweeted: “Can the CEO of @jlandpartners PLEASE CONTACT #KevinTheCarrot URGENTLY. Thank you. #ExcitableEdgar.”

It all looks simple enough, but those more au fait with social media goings-on instantly recognised the not so subtle jibe at pop superstar Mel B.

After spotting her image being used on a recent Tesco Clubcard advert she fired out on social media: “Can the CEO OF @tescofood DAVE LEWIS PLEASE CONTACT ME URGENTLY. Thank you. “

However, the festive fun didn’t stop at poking fun at the supermarket giant or music superstar.

DON’T MISS…

John Lewis and Waitrose responded to Aldi to share that they were huge fans of Kevin the Carrot and were glad that he could feature on their own adverts.

The Tweet read: “Here at John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners we are really big fans of #KevinTheCarrot and were excited to feature his photo in our campaign. What do you think @waitrose?”

Waitrose jumped in on the fun and replied: “”Don’t panic @AldiUK. We’re rooting for you Kev. Edgar’s got the #LeaftyBlinders sorted so the show can go on. #ExcitableEdgar #KevinTheCarrot #jlandpartners,” alongside a snap of some very festive looking, albeit rather over-cooked, sprouts (Kevin the Carrots’ nemesis).

Aldi accepted the explanation and conceded: “Looks as though there’s been a miscommunication. Happens to the best of us. @Jlandpartners and @Waitrose have been amazing.”

It again mirrors Mel B’s response after the online exchange with Tesco appeared to be cleared up, as she said: “There was a miscommunication between some of the parties dealing with it but luckily Tesco has been amazing.”

The post has since had more than 5,000 likes as people comment on how “brilliant” the exchange was.

“Think you just won Christmas, Aldi,” responded one fan.

While another said, “If there is such a thing as ‘marketing tweet of the year’ then you’ve just won it!”

“Absolutely fantastic. we still love you #KevinTheCarrot there’s enough love for you & #ExcitableEdgar,” added a third.

A fourth said: “I just love the way all the supermarkets interact with each other over the Christmas adverts.”

Many are even hoping for future collaboration between the major supermarket retailers with one fan tweeting: “Got all the entertainment we need right here on Twitter, Hilarious! next year’s Tesco advert should feature #ExcitableEdgar and #KevinTheCarrot.”

To which the budget retailer replied: “Who knows what the future may hold?”

Leaving many hopefuls for future collaborations between the retailers.

One Twitter user going as far as even suggesting a major supermarket collaboration between all supermarkets for a good cause.

Replying to Aldi’s tweets one user wrote: “Would be great to see all the big supermarkets @sainsburys, @Tesco, @waitrose, @LidlGB, @asda, @Morrisons, @IcelandFoods come together one Christmas for a joint ad campaign for Charity/charities? Plus any others that fancy joining in!? Just saying…”
