At the end of season three, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) were seen burning their clothes along with Jones’ beanie in the woods.

Cooper told her two friends: “We’ll wash off the blood in the swimming hole.

“After tonight, we never speak of this, ever. Not to each other, not to our parents, no one.

“We finish our senior year, we graduate and we’ll go our separate ways. That is the only way we won’t get caught.”

In an interview with E!, Executive Producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa spoke of how this season is going to play out.

He said: “I think some of the fun of season four and flashing to that is understanding and figuring out how we get to that point in the story.

“So it’s not something that is immediately going to happen, but we’re going to start sort of seeing threads pulled in that direction.

“We’re going to see what leads up to it and then we’re going to see the fallout to that scene, and that’s sort of the general shape of season four.”

Riverdale aired its annual Halloween episode which saw Jones get locked in a coffin for the night by his fellow Stonewall Prep classmates.

There is a lot of speculation the town’s resident writer’s demise will be thanks to student Bret Western Wallis (Sean Depner) as the pair continue to throw shade at one another.

The show also showed a flash forward where Jones’ body was laying on a slab in the coroner’s office as his dad Sheriff FJ Jones (Skeet Ulrich) and Cooper looked at him teary-eyed.

But is he really dead and if so, is Bret behind his murder?

Riverdale continues every Thursday on Netflix UK.
