Matt Baker: ‘You’ve got to pretend’ The One Show host in Strictly Come Dancing admission

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley, 35, appeared on The One Show to promote her new series Scarborough, but was soon quizzed on her Strictly Come Dancing progress by hosts Matt Baker, 41, and Angela Scanlon, 35.

The actress, who is partnered up with professional dancer Johannes Radebe, 32, insisted she wasn’t picking up the Charleston dance very well.

“I can’t even put into words what I look like,” she told the presenters.

Catherine went on to say she performed the dance to her mum, who she claimed cried with laughter.

She added: “She said, ‘You cannot do that on the BBC, it’s horrendous.’”

Matt, who competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, then told Catherine to “go for comedy”.

“That’s what I’m thinking. Go for comedy every time and we will be fine,” she added.

Matt then issued his advice to Catherine, telling the star to always have a smile on her face throughout the performances.

He said: “Listen, seriously, you’ve just got to pretend you’re really enjoying yourself.

“You’ve got to put a smile on your face, choreograph a few smiles in there as well.”

Catherine replied: “I’m happy as Larry, I’m just not that great at dancing.”

Matt performed in the eighth series of the show alongside former professional Aliona Vilani, 35.

The duo finished in second place to winners Kara Tointon, 36, and Artem Chigvintsev, 37.

Last weekend, Catherine was partnered with Johannes during this series’ launch show.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, 59, on her self-titled show earlier this week, she spoke of the duo’s friendship behind-the-scenes.

Catherine joked she had been “getting into trouble” for laughing “too much” in rehearsals.

She told the host: “He is hilarious. He is the most beautiful dancer and he is really patient.

“He is still disciplined but we are already getting into trouble for laughing too much.”

Catherine went on to say the show is “harder” than she thought.

She added: “I am a huge fan of the show and I have often watched it and thought, ‘Oh I can do that,’ but it is so much harder than I thought.

“But I am having the best time.”

The One Show continues tonight at 7pm. Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this month.
