West Ham 0-1 Man City LIVE: Score, goals and Premier League updates, Gabriel Jesus GOAL

WEST HAM 0-2 MAN CITY | JESUS (25), STERLING (51)

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Fredericks, Balbuena, Diop, Cresswell, Wilshere, Rice, Antonio, Lanzini, Anderson, Haller

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko, David Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne, Sterling, Mahrez, Jesus

  • Gabriel Jesus gives Manchester City the lead – converting Kyle Walker’s cross
  • Raheem Sterling doubles the score with tidy finish underneath Fabianski
  • VAR cancels out Gabriel Jesus goal for offside in the build-up

WEST HAM 0-2 MAN CITY

54: Ah… you knew it wouldn’t be long before VAR got involved this season. Manchester City think they’ve grabbed a third after Raheem Sterling serves it on a plate for Gabriel Jesus.

The City lads celebrate but VAR checks for offside – and Sterling is perhaps less than a millimetre when latching onto David Silva’s pass.

WEST HAM 0-2 MAN CITY | STERLING

51: GOAL! Manchester City double their lead through Raheem Sterling, who simply never blanks against the Hammers.

A crisp, positive attack led by Kevin De Bruyne sees the Belgian slip the ball through to Sterling, who finishes under Fabianski with his left foot!

50: Manuel Pellegrini will need to make some changes if things stay like this. West Ham have barely entered the Manchester City half since the restart. Feels like only a matter of time before the second goes in…

48: I see lots of people on Twitter (armchair experts) asking why exactly West Ham aren’t just taking the game to Manchester City. My answer would be to look at what happened to Norwich with their expensive football at Anfield yesterday.

It’s just been death by a thousand cuts.

46: No let-up from Manchester City, who pick up from where they left off – in control.

WEST HAM 0-1 MAN CITY

45: Back underway. I spent that 15-minute break explaining to a colleague why Watford will be a force this season. Not a Hornets supporter I’ve just got a feeling.

New signing Pablo Fornals is ON to make his West Ham debut, replacing Antonio.

WEST HAM 0-1 MAN CITY

HT: West Ham are fortunate not to be trailing 2-0 at the break as Diop’s ghastly clearance falls straight to Jesus, who can’t get the ball out from under his feet.

Premier League champions Manchester City have been far from their brilliant best – but it’s enough to hold the advantage at the break.

45: Mike Dean is being very generous today. The Dean, as he is known in the business, gives Rodri three warnings without a caution. Fans aren’t happy about it.

One minute of added time.

43: Classic City this. West Ham started well with a high press and energetic game – but they’ve been passed to death and need that half-time whistle. Not many able to sustain the intensity needed to stop Pep Guardiola’s side.

40: West Ham have started to drop a little deeper as City look to make their dominance pay. KDB plays a quick one-two with Zinchenko before fizzing one on target. Fabianski does well to hold with Sterling eyeing the rebound.

37: Haller looks for an audacious overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area – no venom and Ederson collects. Who does this guy think he is, Andy Carroll?!

34: There’s a quick VAR check as Rodri goes down clutching his face. There’s a graphic on the big screen to show fans what is happening. All resolved very quickly without stopping play. Oh, and Rodri is fine for those concerned.

32: Gabriel Jesus has scored in each of his last five starts in games played in London for Manchester City (all competitions), netting six goals in total.

30: That opener has completely knocked the stuffing out of these West ham supporters. Silent inside the London Stadium as City start to switch through the gears.

Aaron Cresswell needs help on the left. He’s got no protection and is faced with Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez all on his own.

28: Manchester City create another opening with Kevin De Bruyne floating it over to Raheem Sterling – but David Silva sticks a boot in the air and spoils the chance.

WEST HAM 0-1 MAN CITY | JESUS

25: GOAL! Sorry… was that Usain Bolt or Kyle Walker?! The England defender shows outrageous speed to create the opening for Gabriel Jesus.

The right-back overlaps down the channel at serious pace before crossing low for Jesus, who prods it past Fabianski with a neat first-time sweeping finish.

23: Marrez sends Cresswell to the shops with a sharp chop-back onto his favoured left boot before leathering one into the side-netting. Big let-off for the Hammers.

And a big let-off for City as Wilshere collects the ball 25-yards from goal with options. He looks to spray it wide for Anderson but he’s got it all wrong.

20: “Touch!” says everyone throughout the land as Haller controls Lansing’s insanely drilled forward pass. The striker beautifully lays it off to Antonio in the same motion but he’s taken a wild spin to the deck.

17: Fredericks cleans out Sterling over on the byline and Manchester City, who haven’t been at their best, completely waste it by passing it straight to Fabianski. Clear mix-up between Silva and Sterling.

14: Sebastien Haller has made a few good touches in these opening stages. He’s quite a physical presence – keeping John Stones and Aymeric Laporte on their toes.

David Silva’s awkward low effort flies inches wide of Fabianski’s right-hand post.

11: Save! A superb save from Fabianski to stop Mahrez’s strike from distance. He managed to get fingers to the strike and pushed it out for a corner.

8: David Silva and Raheem Sterling combine nicely just outside the West Ham penalty area but Balbuena arrives to tidy things up.

Penalty appeal! Manuel Lanzini goes down under a challenge from Rodri in the area. Needless physical challenge from the summer signing but no penalty awarded. VAR checked the incident too. Correct decision in my book.

5: Confident start from the Hammers, who are really pressing up high and forcing Manchester City into a few wayward passes. I guess it’s all about being to sustain that for 90 minutes against a side capable of keeping the ball for vast periods.

3: Not the best of starts for West Ham with Aaron Cresswell down after taking a knock from Kyle Walker. The full-back is West Ham captain today in the absence of Mark Noble and It’ll take more than a knock to keep him down.

WEST HAM 0-0 MAN CITY

1: Ready? Good. We’re underway at the London Stadium, where a second rendition of Forever Blowing Bubbles is being belted out by the home fans.

Worth noting that Mike Dean is our referee today – so if the game is boring – at least we can rely on him to do some madness.

In the house

12:25: Always nice to see Paolo Di Canio in the house. He’s doing some television work – some very animated television work as you would expect.

The players are just heading out of the tunnel now to a packed house, thousands of bubbles and a glorious pitch. This should be a corker folks. A corker I say.

He’s strong

12:20: West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini on new signing Sebastien Haller: “We lost three strikers so needed more. Haller is a strong player and good for the Premier League.

“He scored a lot of goals in Germany and we hope he can be a successful player here.”

15-minute warning folks

12:15: It’s turned into quite a nice afternoon in East London. The sun is out, good temperature but the wind is still pretty darn dramatic. The kind of wind that Jurgen Klopp would not approve of.

Anyway, that’s your weather update from unofficial meteorologist Jamie Anderson.

“S*** game to start with”

12:10: I think we’re going to like this Sebastien Haller fella.

The striker arrived at West Ham from Frankfurt for £36million – and let’s just say he’s not afraid to give his opinion.

“What a s*** game to start with!” joked Sebastien Haller. “I go there for a lot of money, now first game City! Why? There are better games to build your confidence! Hopefully I will touch the ball! We will see.”

Wait a minute…

12:05: I’m so sorry it’s taken me 40 minutes to mention this…

I’ll forgive you for missing it but while Jim White was busy checking his phone and playing on Angry Birds – Manchester City completed the best signing of the window – Scott Carson.

The 33-year-old, who played 30 times in the Championship for the Rams last season before losing his place to Kelle Roos in mid-March, will act as back-up to Ederson and Claudio Bravo.

Carson, formerly of Leeds, Liverpool, West Brom, Wigan and Turkish outfit Bursaspor, said on City’s official website: “It’s something I didn’t expect but an opportunity I simply could not turn down.”

Pep in position

12:00: Pep Guardiola has taken his seat more than 30 minutes before the game kicks off. As. Per. Usual.

The kind of guy who arrives at the airport four hours before a domestic flight…

I wonder what if he watched Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Norwich last night. Jurgen Klopp’s side were fairly impressive but by no means perfect allowing the Canaries 11 shots on goal!

#Beef

11:55: We’ve got an unlikely battle going on here. Aston Villa vs Karen Brady! I fancy her chances…

Villa fans are unhappy with the West Ham vice-chairman for saying: “Aston Villa have not learnt from Fulham’s costly flop”.

The Championship play-off winners have spent around £140m on new players – a year after Fulham spent a similar amount before a dire campaign back in the Premier League.

Really?

11:50: I’ve just spotted a tweet from Duncan Alexander that goes a little something like this.

“West Ham start 2019-20 with Dimitri Payet worryingly down to third for PL chances created since August 2016 (he left in Jan 2017). Lanzini 102, Snodgrass 76, Payet 74, Arnautovic 71, Cresswell 68.”

Also worth noting that Philippe Coutinho is currently Liverpool’s fifth highest chance creator but he left a year later.

Team News

11:45: Gabriel Jesus is preferred to Sergio Aguero in attack as Manchester City begin their title defence at West Ham.

Summer signing Rodri starts in midfield for the champions. But Bernardo Silva and summer signing Joao Cancelo have to settle for the bench.

Sebastien Haller, West Ham’s £45million record signing, was handed his debut up front while Jack Wilshere started his first game in 11 months.

Skipper!

11:40: David Silva was named as the new club captain of Premier League champions Manchester City earlier this week.

Manager Pep Guardiola has announced the veteran Spanish playmaker, who is now in his final season at the club, came out top in a vote held by the squad.

The 33-year-old will take over from the long-serving Vincent Kompany, who left the club at the end of last season.

Guardiola, who added that Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero will also be part of a leadership group, said: “David Silva will be our captain. He’s been one decade here, he knows the club, he knows the Premier League. He has big respect from his mates.”

Twitter round-up

Marc: Ah the start of the football season! Just like new school shoes. First full of hope, all shiny, feels good… then over time start to get scuffed and carpet stuck in the Velcro… then there is always one kid with top end Clark’s shoes…

Sowah: The Pep Guardiola roulette strikes again! FFS. Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva benched!

Paulo: If we can stop them scoring three it’ll be an improvement. I’d like to see us playing some decent attacking football and if we nick a point I’d be delighted.

11:30: Debutants? How about two of the four. Sebastien Haller and Rodri start as Pep Guardiola leaves Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva on the bench.

Leak?

11:29: Not much of a leak given there’s 600 seconds until the sides are announced – but apparently Sergio Aguero starts on the bench today. Ouch for Fantasy Football players across the land.

Debut delight?

11:28: We could be treated to four debutants today folks. Debutants who cost a combined £167million.

West Ham duo Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals and Manchester City’s Rodri and Joao Cancelo could all feature. They better had for that wedge!

Morning

11:20: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of West Ham vs Manchester City from the London Stadium.

The Premier League champions are in action against a side they’ve enjoyed a fair amount of success against in recent years.

How much success? Well, let’s just say they’ve won on all four visits to London Stadium by an aggregate score of 17-1.

Yeah… so that’s not a great omen.

We’ll find out if West Ham can secure a 16-0 or 17-1 victory to level the scores in around an hour…

WEST HAM vs MAN CITY – TEAM NEWS

West Ham captain Mark Noble (dead leg) is out of their Premier League opener against Manchester City.

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (groin) is fit, while new signings Pablo Fornals and Sebastien Haller are expected to make their debuts.

concerns over a medication he had used, while defender Aymeric Laporte has recovered from a knock. Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is likely to return up front but new signing Joao Cancelo will not feature and Benjamin Mendy is not expected to be fit.
