Fortnite Season 10: Everything we know so far

Fortnite Season 10 is almost here, signaling that time is a merciless, unfeeling entity bound on returning us to the dirt. And with a new season come new cosmetics, map changes, skins, challenges, and more, all wrapped up in a fancy new battle pass. Trying to guess at the changes coming with every new season gets more difficult as Epic learns to outpace leakers and juke our expectations, so we’ll keep the speculation to a minimum this time around.

Most importantly, we finally got our long-awaited mecha vs. kaiju battle!

Here’s everything we know about Fortnite Season 10 so far.

When does Fortnite Season 10 start?

Fortnite Season 10 (or Fortnite Season X, as the teasers refer to it) will begin on August 1, 2019.

What is the theme of Fortnite Season 10?

I’ve given up trying to tinfoil-hat my way to any meaningful predictions about where Fortnite goes next. Last season we saw The Unvaulting bring back the serene, strange Matrix-like dimension we witnessed when Kevin the Cube blossomed into an interdimensional butterfly. It skipped us ahead into Fortnite’s future, with Neo Tilted, Mega Mall, slipstreams, and a bearded Jonesey indicating the Fortnite of yore is long gone.

The biggest clue we have to go on, of course, is the giant brawl we all just witnessed in-game.

Our two most recent teases to season 10’s theme are two tweets from the official Fortnite twitter.

This first image shows us Dusty Depot, which was the first location ever altered in Fortnite’s first event. It was smashed to bits by a meteor and turned into Dusty Divot. Could we see some sort of return of the classic location? Will there be some sort Fortnite classic mode that returns the map to its original state?

This second image shows us some sort of mech figure, not entirely unlike the mech that fought the giant creature during the latest event. More on that below. For now, this image could be teasing a number of things: The addition of mech suits that alter gameplay somehow? A sci-fi kaiju theme for the whole map?

Most notably, the symbol on the left is the same one worn by the Visitor, a character who was featured in Season 4. The Visitor was a time traveler, and he’s responsible for the many rifts still scattered about the map.

The third teaser depicts two new characters, like skins for the battle pass. On the left is a skull covered in a cosmic blue flam, possibly robotic. But on the right is where things get really interesting. The character has the same sign as Drift from Season 5, but a black mask and different ears. We’re looking at a Dark Drift, which could mean—well, I have no idea. The caption “Twist Time” implies worlds won’t just collide, but timelines too. Expect a ‘best of’ theme for Season 10.

Monster and mech finally clashed

After weeks of slowly thawing out a monster beneath Polar Peaks, and the gradual construction of a giant teddy bear mech in the guts of Fortnite’s volcano, Fortnite fans finally got to see the epic battle play out. Here’s the whole event as we saw it go down.

The fight itself might qualify as the most involved, elaborate event ever held in Fortnite. Rather than just a rocket racing around or players flying into the air over a portal, the kaiju and mech stomp around the upper portion of the map and do some serious damage. The event started out with the monster emerging from the north shore (Polar Peaks still attached to its scaly back) and proceeding inland, until the mech emerged from the volcano and quickly shot off a few volleys of rockets at it.

The monster retaliated by spewing its own laser beam at the mech, and the mech retaliated to that by charging at full speed and launching the two of them into the ocean to the west. Honestly, I thought that was going to be it, but I was dead wrong.

The mech emerged from the water, triumphant and all that, only for the monster to pounce out of the ocean and begin savaging the mech, ripping its arm off. The mech managed to break free, retreating to the pressure plant. There, it yanked some of that lovely portal energy out and proceeded to wallop the monster with an energy-infused punch.

The final leg of the fight was revealed when the mech walked over to Neo-Tilted, grabbed the giant statue of the Synergy skin in the center of town, and proceeded to pull up a giant energy sword. In a final charge, the mech managed to stab the monster through the skull with the sword, ending the fight. As a final farewell, the mech did a one-armed floss dance and flew away into the sky. Brilliant. Love it.

So what does all this mean for Fortnite season 10?

Hard to say, as we may not see any actual changes to the map until the next update. But our best guess is that some damage to the map will be reflected from the fight, and we know for certain that Neo-Tilted will look a little different with its giant statue missing (plus maybe something beneath it?), so time will tell.

The mech, finally complete.

How much will the Fortnite Season 10 battle pass cost?

Expect the usual 950 V-Bucks (~$10) for the battle pass or 2800 V-Bucks (~$30) for the battle bundle, which instantly unlocks the first 25 levels of the battle pass. Players can also purchase individual tiers for 150 V-Bucks each.

Is this the season I finally get good at Fortnite?

I’m looking deep within myself. Dead signal. Radio static. It’s over, man.
