Chelsea team news: Opening day XI predicted – Lampard striker decision against Man Utd

Lampard has a tricky start to his tenure in the hotseat at Chelsea, with the Blues legend taking his side to Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Manchester United have been busy recruiting this summer and will have several new players on show, but Chelsea can’t say the same as they continue to be affected by a transfer ban.

The Blues are unable to register new players for the next two windows after being found guilty of breaching FIFA regulations regarding the signing of foreign under-18s.

That doesn’t mean there are no new faces in the first-team squad, with Christian Pulisic finally arriving in London after completing a move last January then returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Mateo Kovacic is also back at Stamford Bridge on a permanent deal, with Chelsea having initially registered the Croatian on loan before the transfer ban came into effect.

In addition to the two new arrivals, Lampard also has a host of loan players to choose from including returning strikers Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham.

The pair have been in competition with Olivier Giroud for game time in pre-season, and it remains to be seen who Lampard will prefer against United.

Chelsea still have three friendly matches remaining before the start of the season, but Batshuayi is leading the way for minutes so far while Giroud has scored twice.

Giroud is arguably in prime position due to his greater experience in the top flight, although all three will feel they have a good chance of featuring against the Red Devils.

Pulisic will hope to make his competitive debut out wide as he looks to fill Eden Hazard’s boots and Pedro has been in fine form this summer, with the Spaniard looking most likely to get the nod on the right wing.

However, Willian is another option for Lampard while Mason Mount and Ross Barkley could also be deployed further forward.

N’Golo Kante picked up a knock on tour but should be fit to feature and may drop back into his preferred deeper role at the expense of Jorginho while Andreas Christensen should deputise for the injured Antonio Rudiger at centre-back.

Chelsea predicted line-up in 2019/20

(4-3-3): Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Luiz, Palmieri; Kante, Kovacic, Barkley; Pedro, Pulisic, Giroud
