The Handmaid’s Tale season 3: June to make heartbreaking sacrifice to save daughter Hannah

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season three, episode five.

Season three of The Handmaid’s Tale is over halfway through now and it looks like June (played by Elisabeth Moss) may have to make a heartbreaking decision to save her daughter Hannah.

At the start of the series, fans learned her daughter Holly had made it to Canada with the help of Emily (Alexis Bledel).

But despite initially helping June, Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) quickly changed her mind about giving up Holly and now wants her back.

The fifth episode, titled Unknown Caller, saw Serena Joy travel to Canada and meet up with Luke (O. T. Fagbenle), who now looks after Holly.

He only agrees to meet because June has asked him to and Serena Joy got to reunite with the tot.

She insisted to her husband Fred (Joseph Fiennes) the meeting gave her closure and she could move on but he assured her they didn’t have to.

Instead, he set up a press conference where he and Serena Joy called on Canada to send Holly back to Gilead to her parents, claiming she’d been kidnapped.

The commander even made sure June was on stage to add to the drama but the handmaid failed to comply and was seen grimacing on stage.

One fan has suggested Luke should follow in the footsteps of the commander and demand his daughter Hannah back.

Reddit user Michlynn75 wrote: “I can’t see how the Waterfords would have any claim to getting the baby back by stating kidnapping.

“How many people did that country kidnap kids from? Luke has the same complaint to be filed against that country.

“Someone stole his child and re-homed her. so I am so confused on how they think they have any claim here…

“Luke should respond making his own video about how they kidnapped his child just to f**k with them because the irony here.”

It’s very unlikely Gilead would hand Hannah back over to Luke but one theory is they could suggest a swap.

If Luke and June agree to return Holly to Gilead, would they let Hannah go to Canada?

June could be set to make her most difficult decision yet – she’s already risked a lot to save young Holly but would she trade the baby for her first born?

Furthermore, even if the parents agreed, there is always the possibility they could be deceived and the Gilead government could take both daughters.

It comes after Serena Joy actress Yvonne teased the outcome of the custody battle could leave June and Luke heartbroken.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 continues on Wednesdays on Hulu and continues Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
