Inside Man City: Vincent Kompany reveals all as Premier League champions eye FA Cup glory

City face Watford in Saturday’s FA Cup Final seven days on from the dramatic conclusion to the season-long battle with Liverpool.

And the veteran defender, who is set to sit down with the club to discuss his future next week, claimed the possibility of an unprecedented domestic treble, is keeping everyone razor sharp.

“I know this team and they are like a pack of lions,” he said. “When this team is hungry, they are such a special team. And I’m going to do everything I can to put a bit of blood in that water, so this team gets even hungrier.”

Kompany conceded Manchester City have enjoyed an armchair ride to the final having played Rotherham, Burnley, Newport County, Swansea and Brighton to book their spot alongside the Hornets.

In contrast Watford have had to get past three Premier League opponents in Newcastle, Crystal Palace and the season’s surprise package Wolves to get to Wembley.

But Kompany insisted there will be no complacency in their build up to the match or in their dressing room on Saturday, particularly with history waiting to be written.

“Sometimes draws go in your favour along the way but you still have to deal with the challenges in front of you and make sure you reach the final,” he said.

“But to have reached this final and coming up against Watford is an achievement in itself, but now we need to try and win it. You can’t be complacent going into any game.

“My style is pretty simple. Every now and then when things are getting too comfortable, I go a little aggressive in training or I speak up and say what I think.”

Kompany admitted that the motivation to push on through a monumental battle for the Premier League title came from trying to win back-to-back titles – an achievement which elevated this City side to a new level.

An historic Carabao (League) Cup, league title and FA Cup win would emphasise what a special squad of players Pep Guardiola has brought together.

“Winning one title was not enough, it had been done before. Back to back; that is special. We’re a big team and there’s no denying this. I’m so eager to play the FA Cup final; I’m so motivated,” Kompany added.

Kompany is out of contract at the end of June so Saturday’s Cup Final and admitted he did not know whether he will be at the club next season with City seemingly cool on the idea of extending the playing contract of an injury-prone 33-year-old centre half whatever his status at the club.

If so, a second FA Cup winner’s medal would be a fitting end for a player who has been a key part of nine major pieces of silverware – four Premier League title sides, four League Cup wins and the FA Cup in 2011.

It would also see Kompany and City achieve a treble that has eluded the best players and the best teams in English history to date.

“It’s not about adding that achievement [the domestic treble] to my CV. I don’t care about my CV,” he said. “The main thing is that these guys, together with the manager, are always able to understand what the priority is. We focus on winning games.”

Whatever Kompany’s workload this weekend, City are hopeful Kevin de Bruyne will be fit to start in Saturday’s showpiece having come on for the final quarter of the title-deciding game against Brighton last Sunday.
