BBC News: ‘Stop being selfish’ Dan Walker unleashes epic rant leaving viewers pleased

It came as hosts Dan Walker and Louise Minchin were chatting with BBC Breakfast sport correspondent Sally Nugent.

Dan began to talk about a park he had been in over the Bank Holiday weekend that had been strewn with litter.

The BBC presenter said: “Absolutely covered in litter. Barbecues, drinks, all over the place! When there’s a bin about 15 metres behind where I took the picture.”

“Even if there’s not a bin…” Louise stated.

Dan continued: “Just take it away with you!”

Sally then chimed in: “I don’t understand how people think that’s okay.”

While Louise added: “It reminds me because I live near a river and I know if I go for a run down there today I might as well just take a bin bag with me because it will be absolutely littered.”

“At what point do you think it’s okay to leave it and walk away and allow someone else to go and pick it up? Who teaches you that?” Dan questioned.

Sally observed: “I feel a campaign coming on.”

“It’s just not okay. It’s just being nice to other people, isn’t it? It’s selfish just to leave it there. I don’t get it,” Dan responded.

Those watching at home were quick to take to Twitter and agree with Dan.

“@BBCBreakfast absolutely agree with Dan about litter. You should take it away with you. I just don’t understand what makes someone think it is ok to litter,” one wrote.

Another added: “@mrdanwalker @BBCBreakfast totally agree with your views on litter dropping. Loved your rant. I don’t know what we do with these lazy imbeciles. #pickupyourlitter.”

“@BBCBreakfast well done Dan for being so passionate about littering. Our community group do regular litter picks. Our local park is horrendous after this weekend! People also clear their cars by the roadside before they leave places! We need some action on social responsibility!” a third shared.

A fourth tweeted: “@BBCBreakfast Regarding litter. You are right Dan people should be putting rubbish in the bin.”

Later in the programme, Dan noted how a few stories on the programme today revolved around the subject of litter.

Louise then thanked those at home for sending in photos of rubbish as she said the problem really needed solving.

Dan then looked into the camera and exclaimed: “Just stop being selfish and pick it up!”

“Are you shouting?” Louise asked as she turned to her co-host.

“It really annoys me,” he told her.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
