Bad news for Windows 7 as Microsoft prepares users for software's End of Life

Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020, over a decade after the software initially debuted.

Microsoft has insisted after the date, it will no longer provide updates that will protect user hardware.

Discussing Windows 7’s End of Life, the American tech giant said: “Microsoft made a commitment to provide 10 years of product support for Windows 7 when it was released on October 22, 2009.

“When this 10-year period ends, Microsoft will discontinue Windows 7 support so that we can focus our investment on supporting newer technologies and great new experiences.

“The specific end of support day for Windows 7 will be January 14, 2020. After that, technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC will no longer be available for the product.”

For those still running Windows 7 software, Microsoft has started incentivising users to upgrade to Windows 10.

The firm went on: “Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.”

In fact, the Redmond-based company has already started issuing Windows 7 users with alerts on their PC explaining when the End of Life is set to take place.

It appears Microsoft’s push to move users away from Windows 7 is affecting its market share.

Netmarketshare, a statistics outlet, recently issued a new report that stated Windows 7 has lost almost two percent of desktop market share in the last month.

The site said in February Windows 7 was used by 38.41 percent of desktop users but in March it was 36.52 percent.

In contrast, Windows 10 grew month over month, rising from a 40.30 market share to 43.62 percent.

Windows 7 had remained the most popular computer operating system in the world until Windows 10 surpassed it in December last year.

Microsoft fans still running the 2009 software can upgrade to Windows 10 if they meet a list of requirements the tech giant has already laid out.

However, it is worth noting Microsoft itself recommends users move to a new PC with Windows 10 to ensure they can “take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities”.
