Roger Federer WILL catch Jimmy Connors record on one condition – Rusedski

Federer scooped the 101st ATP title of his career last night by beating John Isner in the Miami Open final.

The Swiss star is just eight behind Connors’ all-time record but at 37 years old there are doubts over how long he will be able to compete with the best.

According to Rusedski, Federer will always have the ability to be a contender at every tournament.

But questions may arise over his fitness, especially because his 2016 knee problem

“I don’t think it’s any doubt as long as he stays healthy,” Rusedski told Amazon Prime.

“I don’t think it’s in any doubt.

“I’m looking at him this year and it looks like there’s a relaxation.

“[The match vs Isner] was a big test and he was so good in the finals for a set and a half.

“If he stays healthy he gets past 109.”

Meanwhile, fellow pundit Daniela Hantuchova thinks Federer may enter more ATP 250 events, in which the best players usually skip, to increase his trophy haul in an easier field.

“I think when he gets closer to 107 or 108 then he may consider playing some smaller tournaments,” Hantuchova added.

“I do believe that he will do nothing about it.

“He says it is such a long way and he will have to play for many more years to get to 109.

“We would all love for him to play the smaller tournaments. We have already made a schedule for him until 2025.

“I think it is really just playing the next match and next tournament.”
