Novak Djokovic reveals why he was FRUSTRATED because of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

The world No 1 has had to battle Federer and Nadal throughout his career, with the trio having won 52 of the last 63 available Grand Slams combined since Wimbledon in 2003.

Djokovic currently has the fewest major titles of the trio – but has won all of the last three in Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open back in January.

The Serbian will hope to hold all four major crowns at once again with the French Open coming up in June.

But to do so, he is likely to have to overcome clay-court specialist Nadal – who has won 11 of the last 14 titles at Roland Garros.

Yet with Djokovic in such blistering form and at just 31, there have been suggestions the 15-time Grand Slam champion has a genuine chance of chasing down Federer’s all-time slams record.

The Swiss icon boasts 20 triumphs – a tally he will look to add to before he retires from the ATP Tour in the coming years – while Nadal has 17 but has suggested he could look to decrease his schedule after this season.

And Djokovic admits he has come to realise the positives of having rivalries with two fellow greats.

He said to a reporter when asked if he would be as good a player without the likes of Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka: “Well, I understand you’d like to get an answer on that question. I understand your question.

“I don’t like to usually talk about what ifs.

“I am obviously part of this group of players. I’m grateful for that.

“At the beginning of my career, I was probably frustrated to have Nadal and Federer in the same era because they were winning so much, they were so dominant.

“They kept being dominant. I just managed to up my level and start winning against them on the biggest tournaments, start getting some major titles.

“Yes, I do feel like these guys have helped my game tremendously. I did say that many times before.

“I really don’t know what would happen if I was in a different era. It’s difficult to say really.

“I am grateful that I am part of this group.”

Djokovic’s early exit at the Indian Wells Masters meant fans were denied a final between the Serb and Federer.

But the pair could meet in the final in Miami should they both manage to divert the tricky contests awaiting them between now and the championship match.

Djokovic next takes on Roberto Bautista Agut while Federer is paired with Djokovic’s compatriot Filip Krajinovic.
